The Los Angeles Rams’ 2025 season did not end the way they would have liked, especially losing to a division rival in the final game before Super Bowl 60. Still, with this roster, head coach Sean McVay, and another roster to make upgrades, staying competitive is an expectation.
The Rams should be right back in the Super Bowl race next season, but there is one issue: Matthew Stafford’s future.
Sean McVay Addresses QB Matthew Stafford’s Future With the Team
This season, Stafford had one of the best years of his career, and he is in the race for MVP. Looking at PFSN’s NFL QB Impact Metric, Stafford was 6th overall among all quarterbacks, 1st in passing touchdowns (46), 3rd in completed passes (388), 1st in passing yards (4707), and 7th in yards per attempt (7.9).
His impact on the Rams’ offense is vital to the team’s success, and although McVay is an excellent coach, losing this production would be hard to overcome right away.
With Stafford turning 38 this month and his list of injuries only expanding the more he plays, his time in the NFL may be coming to an end soon. As mentioned, this would be a major hit to the Rams. Today, McVay and GM Les Snead had their major contract extensions with the Rams made official, and as a result, the HC spoke with the media.
During this, McVay had to address the elephant in the room, that being Stafford’s future in the NFL, and according to Rams reporter Greg Beacham, this is what the HC had to say, “I’m keeping my fingers crossed like you guys that he still wants to go play”.
Sean McVay sounds pretty confident Matthew Stafford is coming back, but he’s letting the QB take his time: “I’m keeping my fingers crossed like you guys that he still wants to go play.”

Looking at this quote, it seems like the decision about Stafford’s future is still up in the air. Clearly, McVay wants Stafford back with the team next season, but that is not his decision to make right now. Stafford is nearing the end of his career, and if he does win MVP for his excellent season, retiring on a high note may be the best way to end it.

On the flip side, with how competitive the roster is, Stafford may want to return and fight for his second Super Bowl with the team.
Time will tell what Stafford’s final decision will be.
