The New York Islanders have put themselves in a better spot than a year ago, but questions still persist. The team looks steadier and harder to play against, yet clear limits still show up.
With the playoff picture taking form, management faces choices that go beyond short-term fixes.
New York Islanders Get Linked to $65 Million Scoring Winger in Trade Rumors
The Islanders have a 30-20-5 record and sit third in the Metropolitan Division, after an offseason focused on building structure, which resulted in improved consistency. Unlike last season, the Islanders have avoided long slides and stayed competitive through difficult stretches. Their offense has shown small growth, averaging 2.84 goals per game, with Bo Horvat leading the way in goals and Mathew Barzal driving play.
Defensively, the Islanders have taken a step forward. They allow fewer goals (2.69, ranking third in the League) than last season and rely on structure and penalty killing to stay in games. That progress explains why the team has looked more balanced. However, a power play near the bottom of the league continues to limit how much separation they can create in close games.
Even so, the roster still lacks a consistent scoring push on the wing, which has kept trade discussions active as the season moves on.
NHL insider Shayna Goldman addressed the situation in a recent column for The Athletic. She wrote, “The Islanders are in such an interesting position because they’ve exceeded expectations but are still retooling.”
Goldman added that it “doesn’t make sense to go all in on rentals,” suggesting the team should instead target players with term, including Jordan Kyrou, or a pending RFA who stays under team control.
Goldman’s viewpoint is toward careful moves that support a playoff run without shifting the long-term plan.
Kyrou fits that idea on paper. The 27-year-old winger remains a key piece for the St. Louis Blues and brings speed, quick hands, and a shoot-first mindset. Drafted 35th overall in 2016, he has recorded 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points through 45 games this season.
There are real hurdles to any deal. Kyrou is signed to an eight-year, $65 million contract with a $8.125 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season. According to PuckPedia, the Islanders are projected to be over the cap, sitting at minus $3,217,990. Any move would require creativity and likely roster changes, so it’s not a simple add.

As trade talk builds, the Islanders also stay focused on the ice. They face the Washington Capitals on Monday night in a matchup that carries weight for both teams. With the Olympic break close, New York continues to balance winning now with shaping what comes next.
