Ovechkin attended the Lakers–Wizards game at Capital One Arena as a courtside guest and watched Los Angeles cruise to a 142–111 win. The Capitals captain drew attention well before tipoff, as Stadium Live shared photos of him outside the arena with Trae Young, who wore a Washington Capitals jersey. Another post later captured Ovechkin reconnecting with LeBron James after the final buzzer, adding to the buzz around the night.
During the game, Ovechkin and James shared a brief greeting, which stood out given the timing of the visit. The Lakers star later exchanged signed jerseys with Ovechkin, and the two posed for photos along with Ovechkin’s sons, Sergei and Ilya. For fans in attendance, it was a rare scene that blended hockey and basketball in the same space.
Ovechkin’s appearance also reflected his long-standing connection to basketball. Back in July 2025, he dismissed comparisons to Michael Jordan, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in basketball history. Jordan, often known as MJ, is a retired NBA star and current minority owner of the Charlotte Hornets, and Ovechkin made it clear he does not belong in that conversation while expressing respect for the sport and its legends.
“If you compare me with Michael Jordan, then it’s like night and day,” Ovechkin said. He also credited his mother, Tatyana Ovechkina, calling her a basketball great and a major influence on his fandom.
At 40, Ovechkin remains the face of the Capitals and continues to produce at a high level. He has 22 goals and 24 assists through 55 games this season, leading Washington in scoring. His game still centers on strength, positioning, and a heavy shot from the left circle, while logging close to 18 minutes per night.

Washington’s season has been inconsistent so far, with a 26-22-7 record placing them fourth in the Metropolitan Division. The team scores steadily but leans heavily on its top players in close games. Even with those issues, the Capitals remain in the playoff race, and Ovechkin continues to play a leading role. His presence remains noticeable around the team, both on the ice and during public appearances in Washington.
