Lane Kiffin’s Early Influence Comes to Light in LSU Landing No. 1 Recruit Amid CSC Investigation Relief

No. 1 recruit shares Lane Kiffin's early role in his continued commitment to LSU, as the football program gets promising news on the CSC investigation.

Lane Kiffin’s first season with LSU in 2026 will be in the spotlight as the Tigers craved for a coach like him. Immediately after landing in Baton Rouge, the former Ole Miss coach assembled an elite transfer portal class, and he has also been on the road to continue high school recruiting.

Top Recruit Commitment Highlights Lane Kiffin’s Early Influence Amid CSC Investigation Closure

Five-star athlete Lamar Brown officially signed with LSU in December after committing to the program back in July, though his initial plans didn’t necessarily point to the Tigers. Brown and his team reportedly had some hesitations regarding the yet-to-be-completed coaching staff under Kiffin.

Brown spoke with WAFB on Friday about ultimately choosing the PFSN’s CFB Defense Impact Metric’s No. 20 team, LSU, despite the brief delay.

“I wouldn’t say it was a challenging moment, but it was a moment thinking about, like, do I really want to be here?” Brown said. “Not even just, like, it’s nothing with, like, the coaching. It’s just making the best fit for myself. Like, who’s going to be my coach? Who will still be here? Like, all the coaching changes with Coach Kiffin coming in.

“But when Coach Kiffin came in, I talked to him about his plan with me and his plan with LSU. Then I just stuck with it, and I stayed home. It’s a little crazy, you know, not really knowing people, the new players, and then just going to the facility, seeing a lot of new faces. But I know as time comes, I’ll get used to the people there.”

Brown, who prefers playing defense, holds SEC-level athleticism and is ESPN’s No. 1 overall 2026 recruit. He excelled as a two-way player in high school, earning the nickname the “Travis Hunter of the trenches.” He is one of nine finalists for WAFB High School Football Player of the Year, and ESPN named him the most “college-ready” freshman defensive lineman.

A true freshman is rarely capable of contributing on both the offensive and defensive lines at a powerhouse like LSU, but Brown clearly has that potential. He is also starting to build a relationship with Kiffin.

“I talked to him probably, like, twice,” Brown said of Kiffin. “Pretty good coach from what I’ve been hearing from other people. He didn’t really recruit me at Ole Miss, so I’m just really starting, building that relationship with him.”

Meanwhile, news broke on Friday that the College Sports Commission (CSC), college sports’ new enforcement arm, has opened its first publicly known investigation involving LSU. According to a Jan. 15 email obtained by The Athletic, the CSC is looking into a potential rules violation regarding unreported player compensation.

Louisiana Sports’ Matt Moscona later clarified that LSU football is not involved in the investigation. He also reported that LSU is one of more than a dozen schools contacted by the CSC about unreported NIL deals.

LSU also shared a statement on CSC, which read:

“We have been in regular communication with the CSC since the organization’s formation and appreciate their ongoing collaboration and guidance. We anticipate this specific inquiry will be resolved shortly. We will not comment further on regulatory matters.”

The details of the CSC inquiry remain private, but Kiffin can likely take comfort in knowing LSU football is not implicated.
