Alexander Zverev Reflects on His Intense Battle Against Carlos Alcaraz

Zverev, the third seed at the first Grand Slam of the season, delivered impressive performances throughout his run, which was cut short in the semifinal round at the Rod Laver Arena. In his previous matches, he defeated Gabriel Diallo, Alexandre Müller, Cameron Norrie, Francisco Cerúndolo, and the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals champion Learner Tien.

In the semifinals, he was set to face Alcaraz, who reached his first semifinal at Melbourne Park. Their highly anticipated clash, as promised, delivered one of the longest matches at the Australian Open, lasting 5 hours and 27 minutes. The El Palmar, Murcia, native overcame Zverev with a final scoreline of 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-7(4), 7-5, and now leads their head-to-head 7-6.

During his post-match press conference, the German star was asked about his thoughts on his intense and high-level clash against the six-time Grand Slam champion. While expressing his thoughts, Zverev also acknowledged that he was physically drained in the last set, as the match was closely contested.

He mentioned, “Unbelievable fight battle. Unfortunate ending for me, but to be honest, I had absolutely nothing left in me. So, even at 5’4, you know, normally I can rely on my serve a bit more. But my legs stop pushing upwards. So, just the way it is. This is life. We move on.”

Considering the tough loss, Zverev also reflected that he will be taking his emotions into perspective once the adrenaline and fatigue wear off, expressing, “I think I’m way too tired to have emotions right now, so like in two days, I’ll probably have more. I think we both went to our absolute limits. I’m also proud of myself, the way I was hanging on.”

Despite the early loss in the season, Zverev expressed that he believes in his mindset and preparation and that he will continue to perform better, adding, “Of course it’s disappointing, but this is the start of the year, so if I continue playing that way, if I continue training the way I train, if I continue working on the things that I’ve been working in the offseason, I do believe it’s going to be a good year for me.”
