Tommy Paul Reflects on His Mental Commitment and Desire To Improve As He Goes Against Carlos Alcaraz in His Fourth Round

The World No. 20 has entered the first Grand Slam of his 2026 season after delivering notable performances in his Adelaide International run, where he reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Tomáš Macháč.

He surpassed Reilly Opelka, in the second round and Aleksandar Vukic in the quarterfinals. Before Adelaide, Paul played at the Brisbane International, exiting in the opening round after losing to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

At the Australian Open, Paul has reached the fourth round after surpassing Aleksandar Kovacevic, Thiago Agustín Tirante, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who retired in the second set due to an injury.

During his post-match press conference, Paul shared his thoughts on facing Alcaraz and his mindset for competing against the elite player, who won two Grand Slams in his last season, among other singles titles.

The American mentioned, while highlighting the prominent challenge ahead of him, “I mean, it’s always an interesting matchup. Always a great challenge playing Carlos. He can really do anything on the court. Lightning fast. I mean, he’s like the standard that everyone’s trying to catch up to right now.”

“But you got to go into that with excitement, you know? You got to be ready to face that, be ready to bring your best level and believe in yourself. And I think that’s something that I bring to the table every time I play Carlos,” he added.

He continued expressing positivity on his momentum in the tournament and strong form, “I believe I can win every time I go out there. So, without that, you’re going out there with no purpose. I’m more excited than anything about the matchup and like I said, I’ve been playing great tennis so far this tournament. So, hopefully we can keep going and getting better.”
