Carlos Alcaraz’s Assessment of His Second Round Match Against Yannick Hanfmann

Alcaraz faced far more resistance from Hanfmann in the second-round match on the Rod Laver Arena. The World No. 102 was seeking to defeat the Spaniard at a Grand Slam event, something no player outside the Top 100 has accomplished. He took an early 3-1 lead in the first set and later demonstrated exceptional composure by saving two break points at 5-5, forcing the set into a tiebreak.

This resulted in a 78-minute first set, the longest first set of Alcaraz’s entire Grand Slam career, showing Hanfmann’s well-executed play. The German took a 4-3 lead in the tiebreak itself, appearing set to shift the match’s momentum in his favor. However, Alcaraz responded decisively, winning four consecutive points to secure the set 7-6(4) and establish control of the contest.

Following his breakthrough in the opening set, Alcaraz established his dominance in the second and third sets, with the match statistics showing the intensity of the match. After facing three break points in his opening service games, Alcaraz did not face another break-point opportunity until the final game of the match, where he fought off four consecutive break points before securing victory.

His serving proved particularly effective in the third set, where he struck four consecutive aces in his opening service game to take a dominant lead.

Hanfmann’s competitiveness was hampered by an oblique injury that required treatment from the physio before the third set. While the German continued to play, the Spaniard capitalized on this and won the final set 6-2 to secure the win. In total, Alcaraz hit 12 aces and converted four of his nine break point opportunities.

Though it was a straight-sets victory, Hanfmann’s resistance was remarkable as he pushed the World No. 1 to his career-longest first set at any Grand Slam. Alcaraz will next face 32nd seed Corentin Moutet in the third round with a 92% chance of victory according to PFSN’s Australian Open Simulator, as he pursues his historic campaign toward the career Grand Slam.
