The San Francisco 49ers knocked off the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs last weekend. However, one of the team’s most important players went down with a serious injury in the game.
George Kittle Sets Bold Return Timeline After Achilles Injury
George Kittle suffered an Achilles injury against the Eagles, and that’s one of the worst injuries a player can deal with. Sometimes these injuries keep a player out for a full year, but Kittle recently revealed a bold timeline for his return.
Kittle played in 11 games in 2025, catching 57 passes for 628 yards and 7 touchdowns. PFSN’s TE Impact Ranking gave Kittle an 86.9 grade for his 2025 performance, which ranked fifth out of 65 tight ends.
Against the Eagles in the playoffs, Kittle caught one pass for six yards before his injury. The Eagles went on to win that game, but lost in a blowout to the Seattle Seahawks over the weekend. After the team’s season ended, Kittle spoke with the media about his injury and was extremely optimistic.
The star tight end mentioned that he expects to be back “well before November,” and even went so far as to suggest he could play not long after the 2026 season opener. Kittle had surgery last week, and apparently, it was “best-case scenario,” because he suffered a “clean tear” higher on his Achilles tendon.
“They didn’t have to drill into my heel,” Kittle said to a group of reporters. “And where the repair was, there’s more blood flow. And so it takes some time off the recovery time.”
Achilles injuries usually take between 9 and 12 months to recover from, but Kittle is indicating he could be ready after about 8 months. So that puts me in a really good mood,” Kittle explained. “It’s not as bad as other ones.”
Kittle inked an extension with the 49ers last offseason and is under contract through the 2029 season. The tight end has earned seven Pro Bowl selections in his career and has been one of the best tight ends of his generation. The 49ers were feeling good after travelling to Philadelphia and knocking off the Eagles. However, the good vibes didn’t last long.
Against the Seahawks in the Divisional Round, the 49ers suffered a 41-6 blowout loss. The offense got nothing going and ended with just 236 total yards. The defense wasn’t much better, as running back Kenneth Walker III gashed the unit for 116 yards and three scores.
Now, the 49ers enter the offseason hoping to make enough improvements to contend again in 2026. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was recently announced as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, so that’s another big hole the team needs to fill.
