The Atlanta Falcons have been in full swing this offseason. They completed a significant move by hiring Matt Ryan as their new president of football. It would be a homecoming for Ryan as he was once Atlanta’s MVP quarterback. Ryan had some words on what he was planning to do for the organization. Here’s more on what he said.
Matt Ryan Introductory Press Conference
The Falcons held an introductory press conference for Ryan, featuring owner Arthur Blank and CEO Greg Beadles.
It was reported by Terrin Waack of the official team site that Blank spoke about Ryan being a part of the staff, saying, “Matt Ryan has been an incredibly special player, leader. We couldn’t represent our team better. We couldn’t represent the National Football League better.”
Ryan also talked about his role with the team and what they are looking to accomplish, stating, “My mission since I was drafted has never changed. It’s to help this organization do everything it can to be champions and to win championships.”
Ryan continued with, “There is a sense of unfinished business.”
Matt Ryan Falcons’ Career Overview
Ryan was drafted by the Falcons in 2008 and spent 14 years as the team’s quarterback. Throughout his career in Atlanta, Ryan threw for 55,767 passing yards and 347 touchdowns. He also won the MVP award for the 2016 season, where he threw for 4,944 yards and 38 touchdowns.
Ryan led the Falcons to the Super Bowl that season, but they were defeated by the New England Patriots. Nonetheless, Ryan had a great career in Atlanta and is admired by many fans.
Why Ryan Is a Good Fit for the Falcons
Ryan is a former quarterback, so he may possess some of the same leadership qualities that he displayed on the field in the front office. He knows talent, having been teammates with some of the best to ever do it at their respective positions, such as wide receiver Julio Jones. Ryan could relate to the players, as he had once been in their shoes.
Ryan iterated on what it would be like with him as the president of football saying, “I think when you are quarterback of an organization for a long time, the interactions that you have with the head coach and the meetings that you sit in in their office and talk about all the different things that are going on with the football team and decisions that need to be made or alterations in a plan or in a season of maybe changing directions, it’s different from other players.”
Ryan was once a leader on the field, and now he can be one in the front office.
