Madison Keys Is Ready for Her First Meeting With Victoria Mboko
World No. 9 Keys knows she is heading into something new when she steps on court against World No. 17 Mboko on January 15. The American will be facing the 19-year-old Canadian for the first time, which shows how quickly Mboko has climbed the WTA ranks.
Speaking ahead of the quarterfinal clash, Keys said she is excited for the challenge and fully aware of Mboko’s growing reputation. “I’m actually quite looking forward to it. She is a very, very good player. Even before she won her title in Canada she was on some insane like 20-something match win streak. So definitely everyone’s kind of had their eyes out for her a little bit,” she said.
However, Keys still expects Mboko’s aggressive approach to be a real test. “It’s going to be a really tough match. It’s always really difficult playing some of these younger players who kind of just go for everything. It feels like they have no scar tissue yet, so they really just kind of swing for the fences,” she said.
“So it’s always a unique experience, having been on the other side for so long, now being on the older side of things,” the 30-year-old added.

Mboko has done well in Adelaide so far. She started with a strong win over Beatriz Haddad Maia, then backed it up by defeating Anna Kalinskaya in three tough sets. In the United Cup, she picked up a notable win against Lin Zhu.

On the other side, Keys began her season in Brisbane, where she reached the quarterfinals before losing to Aryna Sabalenka. She then made a comfortable start in Adelaide with a straight-sets win over Tereza Valentová.
Keys Draws Confidence From Adelaide As the Australian Open Nears
Keys is leaning on good memories from Adelaide, as the city has played a big role in her recent success. Last year, Keys won the Adelaide International and then went on to win her first Grand Slam title by beating Sabalenka in a hard-fought final. Although she feels it didn’t change her life, it was a breakthrough moment for the American.
As the defending champion, she is hoping the tournament can once again set her up for a strong run in Melbourne. This is her third time playing the event. She won the title on her debut in 2022 and then again in 2025. “Twice before I’ve played Adelaide and ended up making the semis of the Australian Open. Then last year I went deep,” Keys said.

Now the top seed in Adelaide after Jessica Pegula’s withdrawal, Keys remains unbeaten at the event. “I’ve never lost here so far. I would like to keep that streak alive,” she said. Defending her title would boost her confidence even more and make a strong statement ahead of her Australian Open title defense.
