Penguins News and Rumors: Ex-Oilers Goalie Stuart Skinner’s Future Still Undecided

The Penguins remain in the playoff hunt, but questions surround new goalie Stuart Skinner. An insider weighs in as Pittsburgh approaches the trade deadline.

The Pittsburgh Penguins remain firmly in the playoff conversation despite a recent setback. They are coming off a narrow 1-0 loss to the Boston Bruins on Sunday and sit just two points out of a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

With the postseason still within reach, Pittsburgh is expected to explore ways to strengthen its roster ahead of the trade deadline. One of the biggest question marks right now surrounds newly acquired goaltender Stuart Skinner, whose long-term future with the club remains unclear.

Penguins Face Uncertainty Around Stuart Skinner

Skinner has appeared in seven games since joining the Penguins and has posted a 3-2 record. He was acquired last month in a goalie swap with the Oilers, sending goalie Tristan Jarry the other way. Skinner has settled into a shared crease alongside Artūrs Šilovs. Through those appearances, he owns a 2.34 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage.

With four goaltenders under contract, including prospects Sergei Murashov and Joel Blomqvist, Pittsburgh could be active on the goalie market ahead of the March 6 deadline. Skinner’s pending unrestricted free agency only adds to the trade speculation.

However, NHL insider Josh Yohe believes a move involving Skinner is far from guaranteed. “I don’t really see a scenario where they’d trade him,” Yohe said. “If Skinner plays well, the Penguins should be in playoff contention, and they’ll keep him. If he plays poorly, no one will want him. All options are open this season and into the future.”

Ultimately, Skinner’s fate may depend on both his performance and where the Penguins stand in the standings as the deadline approaches. Strong play could solidify his role and boost Pittsburgh’s playoff chances. At the same time, inconsistency might force the front office to reassess its options.

Yohe has also previously pointed out that Skinner has made a strong impression behind the scenes. “Speaking of goaltenders, Stuart Skinner has become an instant sensation in the locker room,” Yohe previously noted. “Everyone loves this guy.”

Much of Pittsburgh’s surprising push up the standings has been credited to general manager Kyle Dubas. Yohe praised Dubas’ offseason work, noting, “Dubas enhanced 25 percent of his roster with his decisions over the summer. He also hired a very good coach. So, I’d say the work he did this past offseason is the biggest reason why the Penguins are in playoff contention.”

For now, the Penguins will look to rebound next against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
