Canadiens Trade Rumors: Montreal Adds $29.4 Million Forward To Trade Deadline Shopping List

Canadiens trade rumors heat up as Montreal eyes a physical, proven forward with scoring touch while staying focused on long-term rebuild plans.

The Canadiens continue to move cautiously as the season progresses, as they are comfortably positioned to qualify for the playoffs. However, December has offered a small look into how the front office is thinking. That same approach now shapes how Montreal could handle the trade deadline.

Canadiens Are Monitoring Blake Coleman as a Potential Option Before the March Deadline

Montreal made one notable move in December when it traded for Phillip Danault on Dec. 19 for a 2026 second-round pick. The decision demonstrated a focus on the future rather than prioritizing quick results. Danault had been a reliable two-way center, but the Canadiens chose flexibility and draft assets while opening more room for younger players in the system.

Outside of that deal, the Canadiens stayed quiet. December featured roster movement through recalls and assignments, but no other trades followed. Management appeared comfortable evaluating players internally and staying patient during the rebuild.

As the trade deadline approaches, Calgary forward Blake Coleman has emerged as a name linked to Montreal. NHL insider Marco D’Amico reported in a recent RG Media column that the Canadiens remain focused on adding physical forwards who can also contribute offensively in the middle of the lineup.

An NHL source told RG Media, “The Canadiens are still looking to add that rare combination of physicality and goal-scoring to their middle six. I heard they were still in on (Kiefer) Sherwood, checked in on (Blake) Coleman, and if ever Alex Tuch becomes available, that’s a player I could see Montreal going for as well.”

Coleman brings pace and edge to Calgary’s lineup. He plays a simple game built on pressure, forechecking, and attention to detail. Drafted by New Jersey in the third round in 2011, he still plays with that hard-working style, focusing on winning battles and supporting both ends of the ice.

This season, Coleman has 13 goals and 21 points through 44 games, along with a plus-10 rating. His production has been stronger in wins, and coaches continue to trust him in key situations. Even during recent losses, his effort level and defensive reads have stayed present.

Calgary has struggled to find consistency after a slow start and sits at 18-22-4 after a 4-1 loss to the Bruins on Thursday. Coleman left that game early with an undisclosed injury, though reports said the exit was precautionary and related to soreness. Scoring has been an issue for the Flames, who average 2.55 goals per game despite Coleman and Nazem Kadri leading the offense.

Coleman is signed to a six-year, $29.4 million contract with a $4.9 million cap hit that runs through the 2026-27 season. His contract and experience make him a good option if Montreal looks to add a proven forward without straying from its long-term plan. For now, the Canadiens remain patient, but their trade deadline watch list appears to be growing.
