Tyreek Hill Pours Cold Water on Chiefs’ Dreams of Hiring Mike McDaniel as New OC

Tyreek Hill's intimate knowledge of Kansas City and Miami's offensive systems affords him a unique perspective on how Mike McDaniel might fit with the Chiefs.

There is a particular kind of hope that sets in during NFL offseason rumor season, the kind that convinces fan bases they’re only one brilliant hire away from fixing everything.

For the Kansas City Chiefs, that hope arrived right on schedule, carried by whispers of offensive coordinator Matt Nagy eyeing head coaching jobs and the sudden availability of a very familiar offensive mastermind.

Mike McDaniel, freshly dismissed by the Miami Dolphins, seemed like the kind of name that sparks message boards into overdrive.

Tyreek Hill on Mike McDaniel Not Being a Good Fit in Kansas City

And then Tyreek Hill showed up and turned the temperature down.

Hill is a player who thrived in Kansas City, exploded statistically in Miami, and played inside Mike McDaniel’s offense long enough to know its limits.

“Mike don’t fit yall scheme buddy sorry to tell ya,” he tweeted on Thursday.

Hill’s assessment arrived a few hours after Dolphins owner Stephen Ross announced McDaniel’s firing, explaining the organization was “in need of comprehensive change.”

That ending feels strange when you look at the record. McDaniel finished his four-year run with a winning mark (35-33), never dipping below seven wins in a season.

He came to Miami at 38 years old with the reputation of a schematic artist, forged during his years alongside Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco. His Dolphins teams were fast, creative and often breathtaking, at least when things were working.

For Kansas City, the appeal was obvious. With Nagy possibly on his way out and Patrick Mahomes recovering from a torn ACL that ended his 2025 season early, the idea of pairing Andy Reid with another inventive offensive mind felt both logical and tantalizing.

The Chiefs remain among the most attractive coordinator destinations, but Hill’s reaction suggests that fit matters more than repertoire.

Yes, Hill was historically productive under McDaniel, topping 1,700 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons with the Dolphins. And yet, by late 2024 and into 2025, the relationship between Hill and McDaniel reportedly began to fray, according to FOX Sports.

What started as mutual admiration cooled into frustration, as Hill’s 2025 season ended early with a Week 4 knee injury. For that game, he earned a PFSN’s WRi score of 82.3 with a B- rating.

Hill knows Kansas City’s offense intimately. He knows what it requires, how it breathes, and how much it revolves around Mahomes’ improvisational genius. His comment wasn’t about McDaniel lacking creativity; rather, it was about compatibility.

Nevertheless, McDaniel will almost certainly land somewhere. The coaching market is deep, and teams will line up to interview a coach with his offensive track record.
