Jim Harbaugh is in his second year with the Los Angeles Chargers, who are back in the NFL playoffs. The veteran head coach has succeeded everywhere he’s been throughout his decorated career and is renowned as a quarterback whisperer.
This reputation piqued Peyton Manning’s interest at one point during his playing career, and the legendary quarterback recently recounted a shocking story about the lengths Harbaugh went to in order to meet with him.
Jim Harbaugh Went to Extremes to Recruit Peyton Manning in 2012
The first-ballot Hall of Famer largely had stability throughout his 18-year career. Manning spent those first 14 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts until the 2012 offseason. During that time, the then 36-year-old was recovering from surgery that sidelined him for the entire year of 2011.
The Colts went on to have a dismal 2011 season, which led them to land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft. The franchise subsequently decided to move on from Manning, who was a free agent at the time, and select generational prospect Andrew Luck.
Looking for a new NFL home, Manning did much of his rehabilitation and free-agency workouts in North Carolina, primarily at Duke University. And during a recent interview on This is Football with Kevin Clark, the five-time MVP recounted an eye-opening story of Harbaugh visiting him in North Carolina for a workout.
“(The 2012 offseason) was a strange time for me. I still was kind of in shock that I was a free agent, but the 49ers were one of the first teams that I really worked out for. They came down to North Carolina, I was at Duke and Harbaugh and Greg Roman (49ers’ offensive coordinator) came down there.
It was very CIA, they flew into another town in North Carolina because they didn’t want to get tracked by Adam Schefter or Chris Mortensen. Harbaugh had a hoodie on Belichick style at the workout in case Mort was in the trees, but he was great.”
Peyton Manning LOVES Jim Harbaugh and knows why guys (and QBs) play hard for him. He also tells the story of Harbaugh recruiting him in 2012.

In the end, Manning went on to sign with the Denver Broncos, collecting another regular-season MVP award in the process and leading the franchise to its third Lombardi Trophy. Harbaugh made the Super Bowl the very next year, losing to his brother John on the grandest stage.
The Toledo native left the 49ers a few years later and went to coach at Michigan for nine years. Now, Harbaugh is back in the NFL playoffs and working with an elite quarterback of his own in Justin Herbert.
The two-time Pro Bowler, who currently ranks No. 11 in PFSN’s NFL QB Impact Metric with a C+ grade, is looking for his first postseason victory, and he’ll get that opportunity Sunday night at the New England Patriots.
The Chargers might not be the favorites heading into this clash, but they have a coach who has been successful and won at this stage numerous times before, and as Manning says, consistently gets the best out of his players.
