Stefanos Tsitsipas Makes His Feelings Known After Shocking Taylor Fritz To Keep Greece’s United Cup Hopes Alive

Stefanos Tsitsipas makes a candid admission about his performance against Taylor Fritz, after keeping Greece's United Cup hopes alive.

Stefanos Tsitsipas produced a remarkable performance to overcome a formidable Taylor Fritz, keeping Greece’s hopes alive at the 2026 United Cup. The former World No. 3 later shared his assessment of the upset, saying he put his best foot forward and was fully aware of the level he needed to bring to secure the win.

It is worth noting that Greece had been trailing 1–0 earlier in the tie after Coco Gauff set the tone for Team USA. The American delivered a commanding performance against Maria Sakkari, sealing a 6–3, 6–2 victory and immediately putting Greece under pressure.

Stefanos Tsitsipas ā€˜Pleased’ With His Performance Against Taylor Fritz at the 2026 United Cup

Gauff remained firmly in control throughout and showed no signs of the serving issues that had troubled her the previous year. She landed 68% of her first serves and won 76% of those, giving Team USA a crucial early advantage over their opponents.

The pressure was immense as Tsitsipas walked into the men’s singles clash against the higher-ranked Fritz. Still, his narrow 3–2 h2h edge may have offered some confidence. After weathering early resistance, the former World No. 3 edged the opening set 6–4. The second set proved equally tight, but Tsitsipas held his nerve at key moments to close it 7–5, leveling the tie at 1–1 against the USA.

It was a gritty showing from the World No. 34, something he acknowledged in his on-court interview. He admitted he was running low on energy, but credited the constant encouragement from his team for pushing him through, which ultimately proved decisive.

“I tried my best. I was fighting for the team. It was such a great match from my end. Having my teammates by my side is extremely special. I was running out of energy towards the end. They kept me going. The crowd was lovely. Thank you guys for showing so much energy throughout the match,” he said.

Tsitsipas explained that he prepared mentally for the match, understood the level required, and relied heavily on his team’s support. He was satisfied with his serving, how he handled the pressure, and felt his execution matched his plan.

“I was aware of the level I had to bring out today. I really owe it to my team. Putting that much effort on the court, it’s something I was visualizing last night before going to bed. I was playing the match in my mind. I’m happy it went exactly the way I planned it to go. I was especially pleased with my serve and how I dealt with pressure moments. Really clear headed in my execution and my game plan.”

The final mixed doubles tie is a do-or-die showdown for both teams. Team USA will once again send Gauff to the court, partnering with doubles specialist Christian Harrison, aiming to deliver under immense pressure.

On the other side, Tsitsipas will pair with Maria Sakkari, determined to deliver top-level tennis and keep Greece in contention.
