Lane Kiffin has long shifted his focus away from traditional high school recruiting, instead prioritizing experienced players from the transfer portal. The first-year LSU coach is following the same strategy for the Tigers’ 2026 roster building as well.
So far, there is little question about how effective that strategy has been, especially in landing top wide receiver talent from the 2026 transfer portal.
Charlie Weis Jr.’s Offense Gets a Major Boost As Lane Kiffin Lands an Elite WR
Kansas State standout transfer wide receiver Jayce Brown has committed to LSU after spending three seasons with the Wildcats. The 6-foot, 179-pound pass catcher also attracted interest from Ole Miss, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisville, and Auburn. However, he ultimately ended his recruitment following a visit to Tiger Stadium on Tuesday.
Brown has one year of eligibility remaining and is rated as the No. 3 wide receiver in the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings while posting a 79.0 score in the PFSN College Football WR Impact metric. He becomes the latest wide receiver to commit to Kiffin and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. for the 2026 season, joining former Hawaii receiver Jackson Harris and Old Dominion transfer Tre Brown.
As a member of the 2023 recruiting class, Brown was a three-star recruit, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, being the No. 200 overall prospect in the state, the No. 217 wide receiver in the class, and the No. 1,404 overall prospect. He became a playmaker at Kansas State, recording 41 catches for 712 yards and five touchdowns across 10 games this season while averaging 17.4 yards per reception.
Brown’s decision to leave Kansas State followed an offseason coaching change, as former head coach Chris Klieman stepped down and the program hired Collin Klein as his replacement. With a shift in offensive philosophy expected, he likely felt the need for a change.
Brown totaled 115 receptions for 2,133 yards and 14 touchdowns over his Wildcats career while catching passes from quarterback Avery Johnson.
“Jayce is more confident in himself,” Kansas State wide receivers coach Matthew Middleton said in August. “He’s taken the next step seeing defenses and knowing what’s going on and asking questions. He’s done a great job elevating his mental part of the game because physically he knows what to do. Jayce and Avery work really hard together.”
In the 2024 season, Brown tied for fourth nationally in the FBS with seven receptions of 40 yards or more, while also tallying 25 catches of at least 20 yards. He finished with 115 catches for 1,972 yards and 13 touchdowns, adding 161 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
With Brown’s commitment, Kiffin now has as many as eight transfer pledges, six of whom are offensive players. As for who will be throwing him the ball next season, that remains uncertain.
