Ex-Panthers DB Blasts Refs’ ‘Terrible’ Officiating in Carolina’s Loss vs. Bucs: ‘This Crew Has Been Horrible’

Many across the NFL were upset with the controversial officiating decisions in the Carolina Panthers' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In a high-stakes NFC matchup that electrified the start of Week 18, the Carolina Panthers suffered a crushing 16-14 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium, leaving their playoff dreams on life support.

However, many fans and analysts blamed the result on a controversial refereeing decision that directly affected the first decisive game of the regular season and drew widespread attention.

Ex-Panthers DB Calls Out Referees After Carolina’s Defeat to Tampa Bay

Trailing 13-7 early in the second half, the Panthers had possession of the ball. They needed to score in any way possible to put pressure on their opponents. At one point in the drive, Carolina attempted a fourth down in its own half and converted, creating momentary euphoria in the stands.

Bryce Young threw a short pass over the defensive pressure, aiming for Rico Dowdle, but the ball hit the ground. At first, viewers thought it was a backward pass, which would have counted as a fumble, and Dowdle recovered the ball. However, the referee blew the whistle before the play ended.

Had the officials not made the call, the Panthers would have advanced and gained significant yardage. Instead, the ruling of a backward pass and fumble, which sent the ball out of bounds despite images indicating otherwise, resulted in a six-yard loss. The confusion forced the Panthers into second-and-16. After an incomplete pass and a short completion on third down, they attempted a long field goal in poor conditions, ultimately costing them three points.

Social media erupted instantly. Among the most searing reactions was Darius Butler’s. The former Panthers dimeback blasted the officials on X, calling it a “terrible call” and accusing NFL referees of once again tipping the scales in Tampa Bay’s favor.

“TERRIBLE call on TMac! This crew has been horrible in favor of TB,” he tweeted.

Other controversial calls included officials flagging offensive interference to nullify a spectacular 31-yard reception by Tetairoa McMillan, failing to penalize a play after Tommy Tremble’s helmet was ripped off, and awarding a pass interference penalty on Nick Scott after Cade Otton tripped, despite video showing no contact.

The Panthers also made several costly mistakes, including poor offensive execution, zone defense breakdowns, and subpar individual decision-making. Even so, the officiating error loomed large in a decisive game. Now, Carolina must rely on an Atlanta Falcons victory over the New Orleans Saints, who rank No. 10 in PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric with a C+ grade, this Sunday, to advance to the postseason.
