NFL Teams to Clinch Playoff Spot: Updated Playoff Bracket with Buccaneers, Panthers Trying to Clinch in Week 18

The Panthers can clinch their first NFC South title since 2015 with a Week 18 win at Tampa Bay. Here's the updated playoff bracket and all clinching scenarios.

The NFC South crown comes down to a Saturday afternoon showdown in Tampa, and Carolina holds all the cards, even if it doesn’t play them perfectly.

The Carolina Panthers (8-8) can clinch their first division title since 2015 with a win or tie against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-9). But here’s where Week 18 gets weird: Carolina can also back into the playoffs with a loss. If the Atlanta Falcons beat the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, a three-way 8-9 tie atop the division would trigger a tiebreaker that the Panthers win based on their 3-1 record against Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

How the Buccaneers and Panthers Can Win the NFC South

Dave Canales isn’t interested in the chaos scenario that gets them into the playoffs. “We’re aware of all those scenarios, and it’s a pretty simple path. We’ve got to handle business and win the game,” Canales told reporters this week.

Tampa Bay’s path is narrow and requires help. The Buccaneers must beat Carolina on Saturday, then wait for the Saints to upset the Falcons on Sunday. If Atlanta wins, Carolina claims the division regardless of what happens at Raymond James Stadium.

“First and foremost, we have to win on Saturday, so that’s the main focus,” Baker Mayfield said. “Can’t control what happens in the game Sunday, but we can control how Saturday goes.”

The Buccaneers have lost seven of their last eight games after starting the season 6-2. That freefall from 90.3% division odds ahead of their Week 9 bye—when they were 6-2—to needing help in Week 18 represents one of the more stunning collapses of the 2025 season. Todd Bowles’ job security has become a storyline, with his contract through 2028 providing some insulation against an immediate move.

The numbers tell the story of Tampa Bay’s decline. According to PFSN’s Offensive Impact metrics, the Buccaneers rank just 22nd in overall offensive efficiency with a C- grade. Their 5.1 yards per play (23rd) and 2.04 points per drive (20th) reflect an attack that has sputtered since the hot start.

Perhaps most damning: Tampa Bay ranks 27th in third-down avoidance rate (21.9%), meaning they’re constantly putting themselves in must-convert situations, and their 55.3% red zone touchdown rate (21st) shows they’re not finishing drives when they get there. For a team that needs a win on Saturday, those efficiency gaps could prove fatal.

Carolina’s turnaround has been equally dramatic in the opposite direction. Bryce Young, benched for Andy Dalton in September 2024, has led 12 game-winning drives since entering the league—the most by any quarterback in that span. He’s 8-7 as a starter this season with 21 touchdowns and a career-best 63.2% completion rate.

“I’m super grateful for the opportunity. Anytime you get to play football, it’s a blessing,” Young said. “Being able to play for what we’re playing for, that means a lot.”

The Panthers beat the Buccaneers 23-20 in Week 16 and haven’t made the postseason since 2017–a seven-year drought that ends Saturday with a win.

Still to Be Decided

The AFC’s No. 1 seed remains up for grabs among three teams. Denver clinches home-field advantage with a win over the Chargers on Sunday. New England needs a win and a Broncos loss. Jacksonville requires wins from both Denver and New England to fall, along with its own victory over Tennessee.

The Ravens-Steelers matchup Sunday night at 8:20 p.m. ET is an elimination game for the AFC North title and the conference’s final playoff spot. The loser goes home; Pittsburgh advances in a tie.

Seattle and San Francisco meet Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET with the NFC’s top seed on the line. The winner takes the NFC West and home-field advantage throughout the conference playoffs. A Seahawks loss drops them to No. 5; a 49ers loss means No. 6 unless the Rams lose to Arizona.
