It all started in Week 9 vs. the Houston Texans. Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix attempted 37 passes in a game independent of game script. He’d go on to cross that threshold in six of his next seven games. Now, Nix is tied for the most pass attempts in the league through 16 games (589), is No. 10 in passing yards per game (236.9), and is eighth in total touchdowns (30).
Joe Lombardi on Bo Nix’s Progress
In other words, there’s no fall off. Broncos offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi is pleased with Nix.
He said, “Yes, I think we’ve been playing a little bit better the last few games. I think probably since the first Vegas game, really happy with the way [QB] Bo [Nix] has been progressing. You’re always trying to ascend, and that becomes even more urgent as the playoffs start. Certainly things that we’re always trying to improve on and play better. We’d like to clean up some of the drops. I feel like we’ve been decreasing our penalties [as well.]”
In that first game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders, Nix was 16-of-28 for a 57.1% completion percentage, 150 yards, a touchdown, two interceptions, and a 54.2 passer rating. Then he totaled back-to-back 300-plus scrimmage-yard games the next two weeks.
And the second time around against the Raiders, Nix was surgical — taking what the defense gave him. He completed 31-of-38 passes for 212 yards, an 81.6% completion percentage, and a 89.9 passer rating. Nix totaled three totes for 15 yards and a touchdown as well.
It’s been quite the start for Nix in his first two seasons of his career. He is 23-10 and is one win away from clinching the No. 1 seed in the AFC Conference.
Lombardi continued, saying, “Just overall, specifically, the drops were a big thing we’re trying to clean up. Hit the big plays when they’re presented to us. We missed a few in that first Chargers game, and that could have made the difference there. Just trying to get better in all phases.”
Elsewhere, for Nix, he commented on facing a lot of zone defenses recently as well, while Broncos head coach Sean Payton said “it’s extremely important” to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC Conference.
