The Boston Bruins have stumbled after a strong opening to the season. They’ve lost five games in a row and now sit near the bottom of the Atlantic Division with a 20-18-1 record, most recently falling 4–1 on Saturday.
As the struggles continue, focus has shifted to possible roster changes. According to one NHL analyst, potential help could come from an unexpected source, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Bruins Linked to 25-Year-Old Leafs Forward
In a recent piece for The Athletic, NHL analyst Fluto Shinzawa connected the Bruins to Maple Leafs forward Matias Maccelli. The 25-year-old winger is in the final season of his three-year, $10.275 million contract.
“The left-shot winger would give the Bruins some offensive help in their top nine,” Shinzawa wrote. “He is also 25 years old, which fits the Bruins’ cycle in terms of building for the future while going for a playoff spot.”
Trade talk surrounding Maccelli has picked up after a disappointing stretch in Toronto. He joined the Maple Leafs in the 2025 offseason. But he has struggled to settle into the team’s system.
He’s managed just 13 points in 26 games so far and has often found himself watching from the press box as a healthy scratch. With Toronto looking to rework its roster, the Leafs could be willing to move him. It gives Boston a chance to take a low-risk swing on a skilled player who hasn’t quite fit in. A fresh start in a different system could benefit both Maccelli and the Bruins.
Another Name on Boston’s Radar
Maccelli isn’t the only name connected to Boston in recent trade talk. NHL analyst Michael DeRosa has also pointed to Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson as a potential target.
“Andersson is one of the NHL’s top trade candidates, as he is a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) and the Flames are having a poor season,” DeRosa said. “If the Bruins acquired him, he would significantly upgrade their top four and would also give them another option for their power play.”
If acquired, Andersson would represent a significant upgrade to Boston’s blue line, though it remains unclear whether the Flames are ready to part with him as they attempt to steady their season.

For now, the Bruins have made a small roster move of their own. Boston announced that forward Matej Blümel and defenseman Michael Callahan have been activated off injured reserve and assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins.
