During the Week 16 game, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf was involved in a controversial interaction with Detroit Lions fans. As a result, Metcalf was punished by the NFL with a two-game suspension without pay. Many, including NFL legend LeSean McCoy, have since called out the league’s decision.
LeSean McCoy Calls Out the NFL for Suspending DK Metcalf
During the Steelers’ 29–24 win over the Lions, a fan-player interaction got out of control when the Pittsburgh star Metcalf was spotted throwing a punch at a Detroit fan. While the referees did not see the incident at the time, the wideout avoided immediate punishment. However, cameras later caught the moment, and Metcalf was handed a two-game suspension.
The fan Metcalf punched was identified as Ryan Kennedy, who appeared to be taunting him while leaning down from the stands. The fan is alleged to have said something racial and disruptive toward Metcalf’s family, which reportedly provoked the receiver. Addressing the situation, former Philadelphia Eagles running back McCoy recently criticized the NFL’s decision.
While speaking on the “Speakeasy” podcast, McCoy questioned the suspension, emphasizing that it was the fan who initiated the interaction. He argued that punishing Metcalf was unfair and did not make sense. McCoy also highlighted that the fan should face consequences, adding that he would personally reach out to the NFL Players Association for clarification.
“First of all, the fan came to his job, to DK Metcalf’s job, messed with him, and now he’s going to lose money for his family and his kids? This is some bull crap. I’m going to do my research, and I’m going to call the NFL PA, and I need to know if the fan got banned. Because how are you picking a fan over the dude that’s coming to play? That really makes no sense,” McCoy said.

While the fan is alleged to have made racial comments, it remains unclear whether that actually occurred. A statement released by the Head Murphy Law Firm denied the accusations against the fan.
“These allegations are completely false,” the statement released by Shawn Head and Sean Murphy of Head Murphy Law Firm outlined. “At no point before, during, or after the incident did Mr. Kennedy use racial slurs or hate speech of any kind.”
Metcalf recorded four catches for 42 yards in the Week 16 game against the Lions, moving him to No. 18 on PFSN’s WR Impact rankings. However, due to the controversial incident, he is now set to miss the final two games of the regular season. Metcalf will sit out the Week 17 matchup against the Cleveland Browns and the Week 18 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Lions fan (Kennedy) should be banned. If this was an one time incident, that would be different. But he has been stalking this player. He even made a comment saying that he was trying to cause him trouble. Of course his lawyers are going to lie for him and claim he’s innocent of any wrong doing, but common sense tells you that this player wouldn’t just go after a fan for no reason.
