Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf was seen throwing a punch at a Detroit Lions fan in Week 16. Since the referees didn’t see the incident in real time, Metcalf was not immediately ejected, but the NFL has now revealed its punishment for the Steelers star.
NFL’s Decision on DK Metcalf
The NFL has suspended Metcalf for two games without pay, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday afternoon. The Steelers wideout has previously reported the same individual involved in Sunday’s encounter to security and plans to appeal the league’s decision, per Pelissero.
The on-field incident was caught by CBS broadcast cameras as Metcalf threw a punch at the fan, identified as Ryan Kennedy, who appeared to be taunting while leaning down from the stands toward Metcalf along the sideline, wearing a blue wig and holding a yellow towel. Reports have outlined the situation as a player-fan dispute that allegedly dates back to Metcalf’s time in Seattle and involves the use of offensive language.
“Obviously, I’m not condoning putting your hands on a fan or punching a fan, but he did call him a racial slur,” former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson said on his “Nightcap” podcast Sunday, claiming he had learned why Metcalf engaged in the altercation. “He called him the N-word and he did call his mom a c–t. I think, with those words being exchanged, that’s where the action occurred.”
Sources close to Metcalf informed Pelissero of the same sentiment, suggesting Kennedy called Metcalf’s mother a derogatory word and referred to Metcalf as “something we both know you don’t call a Black man.” Kennedy has since denied using the ‘N-word,’ the ‘C-word,’ or making any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based comments toward Metcalf, according to a statement released Monday afternoon by a Michigan law firm.
Steelers WR DK Metcalf had a history with the Lions fan he confronted Sunday — Metcalf reported the same fan to Seahawks security last season while playing for Seattle, sources say.

“These allegations are completely false,” the statement released by Shawn Head and Sean Murphy of Head Murphy Law Firm outlined. “At no point before, during, or after the incident did Mr. Kennedy use racial slurs or hate speech of any kind.”

Kennedy’s representatives said that since the allegations surfaced, he has been “subjected to harassment, threats, and messages advocating violence, creating serious concern for his family’s personal safety and well-being.” The lawyers also noted Kennedy is a lifelong Lions fan, adding that he “respects the game, the players, and fellow fans” while rejecting hate and discrimination in all forms.
Regarding the suspension, the NFL’s personal conduct policy specifically prohibits any conduct detrimental to the integrity and public confidence of the league, also barring players from entering the stands or confronting fans at any time on game day.
“If a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable,” the league said in a statement.
Metcalf finished the game, a 29-24 Steelers win, with four catches for 42 yards, moving him to No. 18 on PFSN’s Wide Receiver Impact (WRi) board for the season. He has also already been fined twice this season: $12,172 in Week 8 for an altercation with Green Bay Packers linebacker Quay Walker and $14,491 for an obscene gesture in Week 13.
Should the NFL’s decision stand, Metcalf will miss Pittsburgh’s Week 17 matchup against the Cleveland Browns and Week 18’s regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens.
