Before heading to Virginia Tech as head coach, James Franklin played a key role in leading Penn State back to prominence in the Big Ten. Since joining the Hokies on Nov. 17, Franklin has followed a similar approach, as his rapid recruiting accomplishments have drawn national attention.
Virginia Tech was once dominant in the ACC under Frank Beamer, but the Hokies have recorded just two winning seasons in the past eight years. After cycling through two coaches since Beamer’s retirement in 2015, the school seems to have found the right fit in Franklin.
James Franklin Benefits From $20M Move With Virginia Tech’s $229M Overhaul
Virginia Tech revealed Monday that an anonymous donor has made the largest contribution in school history, pledging $20 million. The historic donation comes after the program unveiled an aggressive financial plan designed to help its athletic programs compete at the highest level.
The gift represents a significant milestone in the school’s fundraising efforts, surpassing the previous athletics record of $15.2 million set in 2017. The donation is expected to strengthen Virginia Tech’s push for excellence in sports and provide Franklin and the rest of the athletic department with the resources needed to build elite programs.
University President Tim Sands shared the importance of the moment in a statement.
“We are deeply grateful for this extraordinary and timely gift,” Sands said. “Doing more with less, while a testament to the talent of our staff and student athletes, is no longer an option. Invest to Win is about winning championships. Excellence in athletics complements our academic mission, elevates our impact, and inspires the passion and generosity of Hokie Nation, as demonstrated by this record gift.”
The donation supports Virginia Tech’s broader strategy to elevate its athletics programs within the current Division I and Football Bowl Subdivision landscape. Under the new plan, the university aims to invest $229 million into athletics through a mix of operational funding and philanthropic support.
The development marks another positive step for Franklin in his first season in Blacksburg. Since taking over the program, he has assembled a top-25 recruiting class for 2026, including several high-profile flips of blue-chip prospects.
“This unprecedented level of support is vital and creates tremendous momentum for everything we’re building,” Franklin said in response to the donation.
Franklin arrived at Virginia Tech with a 128-60 career record as a head coach, despite a disappointing end to his time at Penn State amid the 2025 season. During his tenure with the Nittany Lions, he enjoyed six seasons with at least 10 wins, grabbed the Big Ten title in 2016, and led the program to a College Football Playoff semifinal appearance in 2024.
Franklin will now look to apply that winning formula at Virginia Tech, which finished the 2025 season at 3-9 and ranked No. 74 in the PFSN College Football Playoff Meter.
