NFL World Reacts to 44-Year-Old Philip Rivers’ ‘Truly Unbelievable’ Performance in Colts-Seahawks

The Indianapolis Colts needed Philip Rivers to lead the offense, and through the first half against the Seattle Seahawks, he did exactly that.

Philip Rivers’ return to the NFL has become one of the most surprising narratives of the season. Just a week ago, the 44-year-old quarterback appeared fully retired. Now, after nearly five years away from the game, Rivers is back on the gridiron and starting an important game.

The Indianapolis Colts turned to Philip Rivers after a string of quarterback injuries left them short-handed. Rivers was first signed to the practice squad, but by Saturday, he was promoted to the active roster, and by Sunday, he was named the starting quarterback against the Seattle Seahawks.

Fans React to Philip Rivers Performance Against the Seattle Seahawks

This was not a ceremonial return or a short-term backup role. The Colts needed Rivers to lead the offense, and through the first half, he did precisely that. Despite not playing in an NFL game since the 2020 season, Rivers looked calm and in control in the first half against Seattle.

The veteran completed 10 of 16 passes for 81 yards and threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Josh Downs late in the second quarter. That score capped a 10-play, 58-yard drive. At halftime, the Colts held a 13-6 lead.

As Rivers’ play found open receivers and avoided mistakes, fans around the league reacted with disbelief on X.

“PHILIP RIVERS TOUCHDOWN!! LET’S GO!!” an excited fan wrote.

“Truly unbelievable watching Phillip Rivers beat the Seattle Seahawks right now,” one fan said, not believing Rivers was outperforming a playoff contender on the road.

“PHILIP RIVERS HAS BROUGHT THE COLTS BACK TO LIFE – UP 13-3 LATE 1ST HALF AT SEATTLE. LIFE BEGINS AT 44,” a fan commented.

“Phillip Rivers with his first TD pass in 5 years. Seahawks gave him man to man coverage and they ran crossers to beat it. Good play design and execution,” a fan noted the clever play design.

“PHIL RIVERS IS THROWING TUDS AS A GRANDPAPPY,” Pat McAfee joked, referring to Rivers, who became a grandfather last year.

Rivers’ performance added to an already impressive career. Over 17 NFL seasons, he completed 64.9% of his passes, threw 421 touchdown passes, and played some of his best late-career football with the Colts in 2020, for which he received a score of 78 from PFSN’s QBi.
