Sherrone Moore is no longer the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines football program. On Wednesday, the school announced that Moore has been fired for cause.
Moore took over in 2023 for Jim Harbaugh and coached the Wolverines into the 2025 season. He led Michigan to a 9-3 record this season and the Wolverines are lined up to play the University of Texas in the Citrus Bowl.
Why Did Michigan Fire Sherrone Moore?
ESPN college football reporter Pete Thamel posted the news on X on Wednesday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the college football world.
Sherrone Moore has been fired by Michigan, per @DanWetzel and @AdamSchefter. The firing is set to be for cause.

Soon after Thamel’s report came out, Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports shared a statement from University of Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel regarding the situation.
“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” according to Manuel’s statement.
“Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”

Michigan has named Biff Poggi as head football coach on an interim basis, effective immediately, according to the school.
In 2024, Moore led the Wolverines to an 8-5 record and a victory in the ReliaQuest Bowl. The Wolverines had hoped to make an impact on the field this season and even reach the College Football Playoff. But top-ranked Ohio State was too much for Moore and Michigan to overcome this season, winning 27-9 in their yearly rivalry game.
Michigan’s other losses this season were to then-18th-ranked Oklahoma and to Big Ten Conference foe USC, both road defeats. The Wolverines finished 7-2 in Big Ten play for the 2025 season. Overall, Moore finishes at Michigan with an 18-8 coaching record.
Moore has been under scrutiny at times during his tenure with the Wolverines. But his firing on Wednesday will probably open up a lot of suspicion regarding his professional and personal life.
The Wolverines are currently ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press’ Top 25 poll. Not being able to get into the College Football Playoff doesn’t sit well with Michigan fans. Nor does that loss to Ohio State, either.
Poggi, who previously worked under Harbaugh at Michigan, returned this year after getting fired at Charlotte. Now, he leads the Wolverines against the Longhorns on New Year’s Eve.
