Inter Miami Transfer Rumors: Lionel Messi’s Close Aide Will Be Asked To Take Pay Cut

Inter Miami seem keen on retaining Lionel Messi's teammate beyond the end of this month and have offered him a contract.

Luis Suarez is one of the biggest names in football and, alongside teammate Lionel Messi, one of the poster boys of the MLS. At 38, the striker is still plying his trade at the top level and has become one of Inter Miami’s most reliable players since signing on a free transfer in January last year.

Now, with his contract due to end before the turn of the year, the big question is whether he will continue to play in North America’s top league.

What Does Inter Miami’s New Contract Offer Mean for Luis Suarez?

Miami have reportedly offered a new contract in a bid to keep Suarez at the club. According to Diario AS (via @DeadlineDayLive on X), staying at the MLS club would likely require him to accept a lower salary, with Uruguayan side Nacional also keen on bringing him back to his native land.

Nacional would, of course, want to pull on Suarez’s heartstrings in a bid to sign him for the third time. They were the club where he came through the youth ranks before earning a transfer to Europe in the summer of 2006, when he joined Dutch side FC Groningen.

The Uruguayan star also spent five months with Nacional after joining them from Atletico Madrid in July 2022, before leaving for Gremio. After a highly impressive year with the Brazilian team, Miami reunited him with his old Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets.

Since then, the former Atletico striker has registered 42 goals and 29 assists in 87 appearances for the MLS side. He has also helped them to two titles during that time, including the 2025 MLS Cup, although he was an unused substitute in their 3-1 final win over Vancouver Whitecaps.

What Does Lionel Messi’s Second Straight MLS MVP Mean for Inter Miami?

Messi, meanwhile, continues to be Miami’s main man. He was sublime for them in the 2025 season, registering 29 goals and 16 assists in 28 MLS games and carrying that form into the play-offs, where he added a further six goals and seven assists in six matches.

The Argentine superstar had a brace of assists in the final against Vancouver and was subsequently crowned the MLS MVP for the second straight campaign, becoming the first player in history to achieve this feat. He beat finalists Denis Bouanga, Anders Dreyer, Evander, and Sam Surridge, raking in just over 70% of the votes.

On receiving the award, the 38-year-old told the media (via ESPN), “It was a long year, with many matches and a lot of travel, but also a historic year for the club, as it was the first time we won the MLS Cup. It’s a great club, still quite young, and being able to achieve what we did was wonderful, very special.”

Unlike Suarez, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is tied down on a long-term deal with Miami that expires in December 2028.
