Oilers Reportedly Working on Trade To Acquire 2X Penguins All-Star Goalie

Oilers explore trade options as goaltending concerns grow, with reports linking Edmonton to a proven All-Star netminder for stability in net.

The Oilers have remained competitive this season, but they have not been able to establish a clear separation from the pack. Their results place them in a middle ground that encourages assessment rather than certainty.

Goaltending continues to draw attention, and discussion about possible changes has intensified. With trade talk increasing, many now see it as a potential route to consistent results.

Edmonton Is Linked to the Pursuit of Two-Time Penguins All-Star Tristan Jarry

The Oilers hold a 12-11-5 record and sit in a position where they are neither falling behind nor rising. Much of their inconsistency connects to their goaltending situation. Stuart Skinner continues to shoulder the bulk of the load with 20 appearances and a 9-8-3 mark. His 2.90 goals-against average and .888 save percentage show improvement, yet there are nights when everything depends on his ability to lock down the moment.

Meanwhile, Calvin Pickard has filled the secondary role through 10 games with a 3-3-2 record. His 4.04 goals-against average and .851 save percentage tell the story of how quickly momentum can slip when he starts. Edmonton can score and stay in games, but the margin often thins from simple lapses. Together, the group holds a 3.50 goals-against average and a .876 save percentage, leaving the Oilers competitive but unsettled.

This imbalance has opened the door to speculation. A recent post from 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast on X suggested that Edmonton is working on a trade to acquire two-time Penguins All-Star Tristan Jarry. The claim also stated that Pittsburgh would retain fifty percent of his salary. The idea caught immediate attention across the fan base and league watchers, primarily because Jarry represents what Edmonton currently lacks.

Jarry is signed to a five-year contract worth $26,875,000 with an annual cap hit of $5,375,000. At 30 years old, he remains in his prime, and his results this season reflect it. He has gone 9-2-0 with a 2.61 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage, and one shutout. In wins, his save percentage climbs to .934. On the road, he holds a .919 mark with six victories in eight outings.

His recent games underline that consistency. He stopped 37 shots in a 4-3 win over Tampa Bay on Dec. 4 and three nights earlier made 28 saves in a 5-1 victory against Philadelphia. These are the kinds of performances that allow teams to breathe, especially ones that often trade chances for goals like Edmonton.

As rumors continued, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas previously addressed the situation while speaking to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He recognized the attention surrounding Jarry and pushed back against any narrative of regression, saying progression for goalies does not always move in a straight line and that he is happy with the way Jarry has responded to pressure.
