Where Do Georgia and Alabama Stand Heading Into Tonight’s Game?

Georgia capped off its regular season with a 16-9 win over Georgia Tech on November 28. The Bulldogs are 11-1 this season and 7-1 in the SEC, with their only 24-21 loss coming against Alabama on September 27. Since that loss, Georgia has looked every bit like a national championship threat and rides an eight-game winning streak into the conference showdown.

Today’s game marks Georgia’s 13th appearance in the SEC Championship Game, where it has claimed five titles. The Bulldogs sit at No. 7 in the PFSN College Football Playoff Ranking and appear to have already secured a playoff berth, but a loss could still jeopardize their spot.

“I think the caliber of the two teams this year is indicative of what it is every year,” Smart said. “You have two great programs that both played really tough in-conference schedules and will battle for an SEC Championship in Atlanta on Saturday.

“Our guys are excited. We’re honored to be there. Got tremendous respect for Alabama, Coach DeBoer, the job he’s done, and the gauntlet his players went through in terms of the games they had to play and them earning their right to play as well.”

Alabama is coming off a 27-20 win against Auburn last weekend. The Crimson Tide are 10-2 this season, including a 7-1 record in the SEC. They have rebounded with two straight wins after a 23-21 loss to Oklahoma on November 15.

This is Alabama’s 16th SEC Championship Game appearance, and the program has captured the title 11 times. The PFSN College Football Playoff Ranking has the Crimson Tide as the No. 5 team in the nation.

Alabama can lock up a playoff spot with a win, but a loss today would significantly damage their hopes. The playoff committee currently projects DeBoer’s program as an at-large team in the 12-team field.

“There’s new guys on both of our teams that are making plays that probably weren’t as big a part of the game plan back in week four,” DeBoer said. “That’s a tribute to Coach Smart and what he does with his program developing their players. I know that’s something we take a lot of pride in as well.

“You understand what that game was about, but you also understand more who you are now. There are things that you maybe tried or that didn’t go as well the first time around that you learn a lesson or two from.”

Since their September meeting, Alabama has shown some late-season inconsistency, while Georgia hasn’t dropped a game. However, Smart’s struggle against Alabama is also a real deal, as he is just 1-7 versus the Crimson Tide, with his lone win coming in 2022.
