Flames Star Rasmus Andersson Comes Out Swinging Against Insiders’ Reports

Flames’ Rasmus Andersson pushes back against trade and contract rumors, focusing on hockey while dismissing insider speculation about future.

Rasmus Andersson has spent years establishing himself as one of the Calgary Flames’ most reliable players. In the 2024-25 campaign, the conversation surrounding him has shifted into something larger, with rumours, contract debates, and outside opinions piling up around his name. The noise has grown louder with each passing week, yet the defenceman has carried on with a sense of calm.

The contrast between what is being said about Andersson and how he carries himself is striking. With the trade deadline approaching, it is time to address the questions swirling around his future in Calgary.

Why Did Rasmus Andersson Call Out NHL Insiders?

Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson made it clear this week that he has reached a point where he no longer wants speculation to control the narrative. With trade rumours circling ahead of the March 6 deadline and constant discussion regarding his contract situation, he addressed the outside noise that paints a picture unmatched by his reality.

Speaking to Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, Andersson leaned into humour at first. He joked that the only “insider reports” he pays attention to are the ones that help him choose his next goal-stare target. That comment opened the door to a more direct response about the guesswork surrounding him and how little of it reflects the truth. The conversation shifted toward a suggestion from Elliotte Friedman, who said on the “32 Thoughts” podcast that Andersson has been changing his mind about staying in Calgary as often as someone might switch socks.

Andersson reacted with a mix of surprise and amusement. He explained that he occasionally reads those comments and finds himself shaking his head because they imply others understand his plans better than he does. “Sometimes I’m like, ‘it’s crazy that some of the insiders know more about my life than myself,’” he said.

The line captured his frustration while keeping the moment light, setting the stage for him to clarify where he stands.

Andersson reiterated that his stance has never changed. He said he has always been open to listening to whatever the future might hold, but added that he has not been updated much in recent weeks. Instead of dwelling on negotiations or letting speculation guide his mindset, he emphasized his focus on the ice.

“I honestly haven’t even thought about my contract since the season started,” Andersson said. “I just try to play, enjoy it, and whatever happens, happens.”

Andersson also mentioned that he is not involved in every conversation regarding his future, relying on others to manage the business side of his career. This approach helps him stay focused on his role on the team without letting the outside world interfere with his performance. His responsibilities remain high, and his ability to influence games continues to drive his value as he approaches the end of his six-year, $27.3 million contract.

Ironically, the better Andersson plays, the more the noise seems to grow. By speaking up, he made it clear that he does not want others to shape his story for him.
