Usually, quarterbacks receive warm and heartfelt messages after winning a match, but that wasn’t the case for the San Francisco 49ers’ Brock Purdy. He led the team to win the Week 12 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, but fans and experts believe he didn’t have a massive contribution in it. And recently, an NFL expert jumped in to criticize the Niners’ QB with a reference to Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa.
Colin Cowherd Compares Brock Purdy with Tua Tagovailoa
Earlier this season, Purdy suffered a turf toe injury that sidelined him for several weeks. In Week 11 against the Arizona Cardinals, he got his job back as the starting QB. He seemed great upon his return, scoring three touchdowns. Eventually, he led his team to an impressive 41-22 win.
However, during Monday Night Football, fans witnessed Purdy struggling throughout the game, especially in the first half, when he threw three interceptions. His poor performance is now a hot topic on social media.
The Niners eventually secured a 20-9 win on Monday, and while fans are reluctant to give much credit to Purdy for it, they do acknowledge the contribution of Panthers QB Bryce Young. His performance, which was even poorer than Purdy’s, helped the Niners a lot in winning the game.
After the match, fans and experts are coming up with unique ways to roast the 49ers QB, and sports analyst Colin Cowherd has found his own. Recently on his The Colin Cowherd Podcast, he criticized Purdy by comparing him to Dolphins player Tua Tagovailoa, another QB who isn’t having a great season.
“Brock Purdy’s last 20 starts, 30 touchdowns, 19 interceptions, passer rating that’s equal to Tua (Tagovailoa),” Cowherd said. “And what did I always call Brock Purdy? A right-handed Tua. A little mobility, not a big arm, little injury-prone. Tua, don’t trust in cold weather. Brock Purdy has ball security issues in wet weather. It’s the same guy.”

After seeing Purdy’s game at MNF, many are giving up on him and even urging the Niners to bring back Mac Jones, the QB who led the team in Purdy’s absence. And the fans’ demand isn’t baseless.
Jones was doing great as the QB (currently ranking number 10 on PFSN’s QB Impact), leading the team to a 5-3 record in the eight games he got to start.

However, it seems too rushed to lose trust in a player like Purdy, who led the team to the Super Bowl in 2024 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Hopefully, the 25-year-old QB will learn from Monday’s game and bring a better performance in the upcoming weeks.
