How Long Will Baker Mayfield Be Out? Latest Injury Update on Buccaneers QB and When He’ll Return

Tampa Bay Buccaneers faces rising uncertainty as Baker Mayfield’s shoulder injury leaves major questions about the weeks ahead.

The moment Baker Mayfield walked to the sideline in a sling, the uncertainty around Tampa Bay’s season deepened. Baker Mayfield’s Injury Timing Raises Bigger Questions

Mayfield exited the 34-7 loss to the Rams with what has been diagnosed as a left shoulder sprain, according to ESPN.

The injury occurred late in the second quarter and worsened on a desperation heave to end the half, a decision that has become a focal point in the aftermath. The Bucs were trailing by 24 and facing a fourth-and-long situation from their own 37 with five seconds left. But rather than running out the clock, Mayfield took the shot that aggravated the injury.

Head coach Todd Bowles explained the sequence clearly, saying, “He said he was fine. He went back in and aggravated it on the last play.” He added that Mayfield had initially been hurt during a touchdown throw to Tez Johnson and was evaluated in the medical tent before returning.

After the halftime throw, Mayfield did not return in uniform and kept his non-throwing arm secured in a sling. X-rays were reportedly negative, but the MRI scheduled for Monday will determine the seriousness of the injury and reveal whether the sprain is mild or something more severe.

Mayfield’s history adds another layer to the uncertainty. He previously dealt with issues in the same shoulder and underwent labral repair surgery on the left side in 2022. That past injury required stabilization and recovery, and it raises questions about whether this latest sprain involves muscular discomfort or something that could affect joint stability again.

On Monday, NFL insider Adam Schefter provided an update on Mayfield. “Pre MRI, the Buccaneers believe Baker Mayfield suffered a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder, per sources,” he wrote on X. “There was no fracture and no structural damage. One source said the Buccaneers “are not ruling out” Mayfield for Sunday’s game vs. the Cardinals. But today’s MRI will tell more.”

After the MRI test, NFL insider Ian Rapoport provided an update on the Buccaneers quarterback. “Baker Mayfield, who went down on Sunday with a sprained left shoulder, has a low-grade sprain, source said following the MRI,” he wrote on X. “Good news with an eye toward next week.”

As of now, Mayfield should be able to play next week against the Arizona Cardinals. However, if he faces any setback, the Buccaneers will have to pivot to Teddy Bridgewater.

Bridgewater finished the game against the Rams after traveling the morning of kickoff to attend a funeral. Bridgewater said, “I’m very confident, and if it’s my turn, my number, I’ve just got to answer the bell.”

According to PFSN’s QB Impact metric, Mayfield had posted a QB Impact Score of 73.5 through 10 games this season, matching the leaguewide average for the metric. His score ranked 22nd for the 2025 season and placed him 501st on the all-time list dating back to 2000.

He completed 216 of 340 pass attempts, a 63.5 percent rate that reflects reliable efficiency even while the offense around him fluctuated. These numbers underscore the significant impact his presence has had on the Buccaneers’ overall structure.

The Bucs, once 5-1, with Mayfield leading multiple late comebacks, now sit at 6-5 and face a challenging three-game home stretch. Bowles plans to elevate Connor Bazelak from the practice squad if needed and remains confident in Bridgewater with a full practice week.

Even as several offensive players return from injuries, the Buccaneers’ outlook is tied directly to Mayfield’s availability. Fortunately for them, their quarterback has avoided a significant injury.
