National Analyst Demands BYU and Utah to Be Thrown Out By College Football Playoff Committee

Todd McShay argues BYU and Utah should be dropped from College Football Playoff consideration while Miami pushes to move ahead in the latest rankings.

The College Football Playoff Committee revealed the third rankings of the 2025 season last Tuesday. BYU came in at No. 12, and Utah was No. 13 in the ranking.

The committee is scheduled to announce its fourth set of rankings on Tuesday, and some major shakeups are expected to happen this time as the regular season is almost near its end.

Sports Analyst Calls for College Football Playoff Committee to Remove BYU and Utah From Consideration

BYU is 10-1 this season, with the Cougars only 29-7 loss coming against Texas Tech on Nov. 8. BYU improved to No. 11 in the CFP ranking after a 44-13 win over TCU on Nov. 15.

Meanwhile, Utah is 9-2, with the Utes’ 34-10 loss against Texas Tech on Sept. 20 and 24-21 loss against BYU on Oct. 18. The Utes climbed from No. 13 following their 55-28 win over Baylor on Nov. 15.

BYU is ranked at the No. 11 in the PFSN College Football Playoff Ranking and Utah sits at No. 12. Both programs remain in the CFP top 25, but neither is positioned inside the 12-team expanded playoff field.

During “The McShay Show” on Saturday, analyst Todd McShay joined those calling for both teams to be dropped in the next CFP Rankings.

“This is the week I’m charging the committee with, let’s look at the big picture,” McShay said (01:24:28). “ Let’s actually get real this week. And think for the most part they’ve done a good job, but I think they’re missing the boat on the Big 12. The Big 12 is just not. They’re just not. The ACC is a mess, and they’ve recognized that they, and they’ve gotten the best team up there ahead of some of the others.

“You know, Miami was 8-2. I applaud them for that. Well, let’s get BYU and Utah out of here. They don’t belong because Miami might be good enough, right? My point is BYU gets knocked out. Utah needs to go away.”

Miami landed one spot behind Utah in the CFP rankings, at No. 13. Even though many argued the Hurricanes should be ranked above Utah, CFP Selection Committee chair Hunter Yurachek has already explained their placement, saying Miami’s two losses came against unranked Louisville and unranked SMU.

Meanwhile, Utah has two quality losses to Texas Tech and BYU. But then again, the Utes have only one win over a team currently ranked in the committee’s Top 25, and it’s Arizona State. Their latest 51-47 win over Kansas State also can’t be labelled as a difference maker.

So, the committee may choose to reward Miami’s 34-17 win over Virginia Tech last weekend, which marked the Hurricanes’ third consecutive win by at least 17 points.
