NFL Announces Fine for George Pickens Ahead of Week 12

The celebratory gesture performed by George Pickens in the Cowboys' win Monday night came at a pretty hefty price after he was fined by the NFL.

George Pickens just played arguably his best game of the 2025 campaign, but the NFL made sure it came with a hefty price tag. The league announced its weekly fines Saturday, and the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver landed on the list after his exuberant touchdown celebration against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Why Did George Pickens Receive a Massive Fine?

The Cowboys traveled to Las Vegas for a “Monday Night Football” showdown and finally looked like themselves again. They snapped a two-game losing streak by crushing the Raiders behind quarterback Dak Prescott, who tossed four touchdown passes in the rout.

One of those scoring strikes found Pickens for a 37-yard touchdown late in the first half. The receiver was already in the midst of a career day and dominating the target share even with teammate CeeDee Lamb on the field. Naturally, Pickens felt a celebration was in order.

Pickens crossed the goal line and immediately leaped onto the goal post to hug it. That specific gesture drew a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct, and, as reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, resulted in a $26,085 fine.

The NFL has cracked down on excessive celebrations and showboating in recent years to enforce sportsmanship, and Pickens became the latest example of that initiative. However, this is not the first time the league has taken money out of the 24-year-old’s pockets.

How Has the Trade to Dallas Changed Pickens’ Trajectory?

Data from Spotrac indicates Pickens has now been fined 15 times throughout his young career, with five of those infractions occurring this season alone. Yet, none of those previous penalties cost him more than this recent interaction with the goal post.

The financial hit is unlikely to dampen the excitement surrounding his performance in Dallas. The Cowboys acquired him from the Pittsburgh Steelers this past offseason for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Many critics argued at the time that the price was far too low for a player of Pickens’ caliber.

He has spent his first season with the Cowboys proving those critics right. Pickens has already broken his single-season high for receiving touchdowns with seven through just 10 games; his previous best was five. He has hauled in 58 receptions for 908 yards, meaning he sits just six catches and 233 yards away from setting new personal bests in both categories.

Monday’s game against the Raiders highlighted his growing chemistry with the offense. He finished the night with nine receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown, marking the third time this season he has eclipsed 130 receiving yards in a single contest.

His dominance is also evident in the advanced metrics. The 92.0 PFSN WR Impact score Pickens has posted this year ranks third in the entire league among wide receivers. He trails only Puka Nacua of the Los Angeles Rams and Jaxon Smith-Njigba of the Seattle Seahawks.
