View From the Other Sideline: Q&A With 49ers Beat Writer Previews MNF vs. Panthers

Ahead of the Week 12 Monday Night Football showdown between the Panthers and 49ers, the beat writers for each team discuss what to look for.

The Carolina Panthers (6-5) and San Francisco 49ers (7-4) are both fresh off meaningful Week 11 wins and are bracing for impact in a Week 12 Monday Night Football showdown.

To match the primetime energy, I joined forces with Pedro Narduchi, PFSN’s 49ers beat writer, to collaborate on a Q&A. Our goal is to provide both teams’ fan bases with an inside perspective on what to watch for in this crucial game. Below is Pedro’s analysis of the 49ers.

How Are These Teams Different Than What Many May Assume About Them?

Pedro: At first glance, it is inevitable to look at the 49ers roster and see that this is no longer the star-studded team that reached the Super Bowl two years ago, but one thing remains the same: Kyle Shanahan’s brilliance as a play designer. San Francisco has an efficient offense that can move the ball with ease, ranking 10th in yards per game with 349.4 and eighth on the PFSN Offense Impact Meter with a score of 82.9. With the starting unit finally healthy, we can expect more explosiveness and better red zone efficiency moving forward.

Is There an Area in This Matchup That Stands Out to You as a Potential Key to the Game?

Pedro: George Kittle’s return to the lineup allowed the 49ers to get back to using their favorite personnel more consistently, and against the Arizona Cardinals, they lined up in 21 personnel on more than 50 percent of their snaps. That versatility helped both the passing and running games operate smoothly, making defensive alignments harder to handle.

San Francisco should continue leaning on that trend now that Brock Purdy is back and the offense can run without restrictions. Christian McCaffrey is expected to be the focal point of Shanahan’s game plan, stressing a defense that struggled to contain Bijan Robinson, who finished the last game with 133 total yards and two touchdowns.

What Is Your Biggest Concern Heading Into Week 12?

Pedro: There are two key concerns heading into the matchup with the Panthers. The first is how the 49ers’ defense will perform, given that it has been one of the five worst units against the pass in 2025. Stopping Carolina’s run game, led by Rico Dowdle, is essential, but doing so could open the door for their passing attack.

On top of that, the physical style of Carolina’s defense could pose problems for the 49ers if the offensive line continues missing basic run-blocking assignments, as happened against the Los Angeles Rams. While the unit performed well against the Cardinals, facing Carolina’s defensive line will require even more physicality.

On a Scale of 1 to 10, What’s Your Confidence Level for Monday Night? And Lastly… Playoffs?

Pedro: The 49ers are coming off their best offensive performance of the season, putting up 41 points against Arizona’s defense and finishing with four touchdowns on four red zone trips, also a season high. Shanahan usually brings his best game plan to primetime, and with this Monday Night Football matchup, confidence is high at 8.5 out of 10.

A win would put the 49ers in a strong position to secure a playoff spot, boosting their chances from 80 percent to 90.8 percent according to the Playoff Meter, with two favorable games up next against the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans. The division seems out of reach, and San Francisco’s focus should be on locking up a Wild Card berth.
