Jayden Daniels’ injuries have derailed the Commanders’ season, leaving Washington stuck in a six-game skid. But the team’s biggest concern remains the status of its young quarterback. Daniels has already missed back-to-back games, and there’s still no sign he’ll be returning anytime soon.
What happened to Jayden Daniels?
Trailing 38-7 late against Seattle in Week 9, the Commanders dialed up an option play near the goal line. Daniels tucked the ball and tried to get the edge, but was pulled down awkwardly. Right away, it was clear something was wrong.
The broadcast showed him on the ground in obvious pain with trainers surrounding him. The replay only made it worse, revealing his arm bending backward at an unnatural angle.
Daniels was eventually helped to his feet and guided toward the sideline with a brace on his arm, drawing an ovation from both teammates and fans. He went to the locker room and, as expected, did not return.
Hours later, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Daniels had suffered a dislocated elbow, which was a relatively positive outcome considering the initial appearance. Soon after, Schefter added that Daniels would be sidelined indefinitely, leaving his season very much in doubt.
Four days later, Schefter noted that Washington was not expected to place Daniels on injured reserve. On Nov. 8, UnderdogNFL relayed Jeremy Fowler’s report that Daniels could miss 3–6 weeks, which was still better than what was initially feared.
Now, in Week 12, Washington hits its bye. In theory, it is a good time to reset if Daniels is nearing a return, but at 3-8, the Commanders have little reason to rush back the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Through six games this season, Daniels went 2-4 while averaging 197 passing yards, 43 rushing yards, and 10 total touchdowns. Finding rhythm was difficult because knee and hamstring injuries cost him valuable time, and now the elbow injury might end his year entirely.
Marcus Mariota has provided serviceable quarterback play in limited action this season. If Daniels cannot return, he will continue as QB1. Mariota is currently ranked #15 on PFSN’s NFL QB Impact rankings.
As for Daniels, his priority should be getting fully healthy. Taking the rest of the season to recover gives both him and the Commanders a better chance to rebound in 2026.
