Ben Shelton’s debut at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin came to an end this week after competing against the world’s elite players in his first appearance at the prestigious year-end championship. Although the American youngster showed glimpses of competitive tennis throughout the tournament, he ultimately fell short of advancing past the group stage.
What emerges from his ATP Finals experience is an honest reflection on both his current form and the remarkable progress he has made during his breakthrough 2025 campaign.
Ben Shelton Addresses His Performance in 2025 Following Jannik Sinner Heartbreak at ATP Finals
Shelton faced defending champion Jannik Sinner on Friday, where the Italian dominated before ultimately prevailing 6-3, 7-6(3) at the Inalpi Arena. While the American was unable to pull off an upset, he demonstrated resilience throughout the contest. In the second set, he fought back from a slow start and pushed Sinner closer than many anticipated.
Sinner controlled the first set with ease, before Shelton made an impressive comeback in the second, thanks to his powerful serve with precision. The 23-year-old American dropped just two of 18 service points through the first nine games of the second set, showcasing the explosive serving ability that has become his trademark on the ATP Tour. He even saved a match point while serving at 4-5, demonstrating the mental toughness that has defined his rise this season.
When asked about his season ending, Shelton said: “Yeah, definitely not my best. Yeah, tough to finish out the season like this, 0-3 at the Finals. Yeah, for me obviously a great year. A lot of positives. Tennis is full of highs and lows. This will just make me work harder in the off-season, make me even more excited for the 2026 season. But yeah, it stings, for sure.”

In the decisive tiebreak, Sinner elevated his game with clean approaches and aggressive shot-making, prevailing 7-6(3) in the second set. He extended his head-to-head record against Shelton to 8-1, with notable victories at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and Rolex Paris Masters this year. Following Friday’s victory, Sinner extended his indoor hard-court winning streak to 29 consecutive matches, equaling Roger Federer’s record from 2010-2012.
Shelton’s Breakthrough 2025 Season
Shelton’s 2025 campaign has undeniably been a breakthrough year, marked by significant achievements. The 23-year-old reached his second Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open and captured his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open in Toronto, defeating Karen Khachanov in a thrilling three-set final.
Shelton became the youngest American man to win a Masters 1000 title since Andy Roddick at Miami in 2004, propelling his ranking to a career-high World No. 5.

In late October at the Rolex Paris Masters, Shelton defeated Andrey Rublev 7-6(6), 6-3 in the round of 16, clinching his historic qualification for the ATP Finals. “This is the best tennis I’ve played in months,” he declared on court.
However, his shoulder injury at the 2025 US Open affected his performances in Shanghai, Basel, and at the Finals. Despite these challenges, Shelton rated his overall 2025 season an impressive 8 out of 10.
