Jannik Sinner’s Coach Reacts As Carlos Alcaraz Ends Year-End No. 1 Fight With the Italian After ATP Finals Act

Jannik Sinner's coach Darren Cahill congratulated Carlos Alcaraz after he surpassed the Italian to finish the season as the World No. 1.

Carlos Alcaraz clinched the ATP Year-End No. 1 after sweeping past Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday to reach the ATP Finals semifinals unbeaten. It marked a significant milestone for the Spaniard, who secured the honor for the second time in his career and even earned warm congratulations from Jannik Sinner’s coach, Darren Cahill.

Jannik Sinner’s Coach Darren Cahill Congratulates Carlos Alcaraz on Finishing the Year As No. 1

The 2025 season has been nothing short of extraordinary for the young Spaniard, who boasts a commanding 70–8 win-loss record with potentially two matches still to play at the ATP Finals. His campaign has been highlighted by eight tour titles, including two Grand Slams, the French Open and the US Open, and Masters 1000 triumphs in Monte Carlo, Rome, and Cincinnati.

Another standout achievement for Alcaraz this year was his run of nine consecutive finals, stretching from his title in Monte Carlo to his latest triumph in Japan in September.

Riding on his trademark dominance, the 22-year-old cruised into the season-ending championships in Turin and maintained that form throughout the event. He opened with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Australia’s Alex de Minaur, followed it with a hard-fought 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-3 win against Taylor Fritz, and most recently dispatched home favorite Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-1 to secure his place in the semifinals.

Alcaraz’s victory also secured the year-end World No. 1 ranking, putting him out of Sinner’s reach. He now sits at 11,650 live ranking points with two more matches remaining in the event. Thus, Sinner, who currently stands with 10,400 live points, cannot match the number even if he wins the ATP Finals.

Even though Sinner fell short of the top spot, his coach, Cahill, offered warm congratulations to the Spaniard. He shared the ATP’s official post celebrating Alcaraz’s achievement on his Instagram story and wrote:

“Big congrats Carlos Alcaraz and your entire team. An amazing effort.”

Alcaraz previously earned the honor in 2022, becoming the youngest year-end No. 1 in history since 1973. Yet his work this season isn’t finished. The Spaniard now aims to close out the year in emphatic fashion by capturing the ATP Finals crown in Turin.

The World No. 1 awaits the winner of the Alexander Zverev–Felix Auger-Aliassime clash for Saturday’s semifinal, with a potential summit clash against his archrival Sinner looming.

Both players have displayed comparable dominance this season, splitting the four Grand Slams and contesting the last three finals in those: the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Alcaraz claimed the titles at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows, while Sinner triumphed at Wimbledon.
