Alex de Minaur Reveals His Mental Breakthrough With Support and Competitiveness

The Sydney, New South Wales, native commenced his 2025 season with the Australian Open, where he reached the quarterfinal round, facing defeat from Italian star Jannik Sinner. He once again delivered impressive performances in ATP Rotterdam, losing the title round to Alcaraz.

He reached the semifinals at the Monte-Carlo Masters, China Open, and Vienna Open. He won the Mubadala Citi DC Open after surpassing Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final round. Apart from these feats, he also reached the quarterfinals of the prestigious US Open. The 2025 ATP Finals mark De Minaur’s second appearance at the prestigious tournament.

He faced turbulent losses, but got back on track with a notable performance and defeated Fritz, ending the American’s ATP Finals journey. During his press conference in Turin, Italy, he reflected on his mental breakthrough journey, which he attributed to his fiancée, Boulter, a WTA star, as well as other individuals around him.

He shared, “I’m incredibly lucky with the support system that I have, the people I’ve got around me, every single one in my team, even Katie. They were able to, or they tried to, talk some sense into me and get me out of a very dark place. Sometimes when you’re in that dark place, you make peace. You start to care less, right? Ultimately you can focus on other elements and not the results.”

De Minaur continued while highlighting his changed approach as compared to his last matches and losses, adding, “For the first time in a long time, I forgot about the what if’s, the results, what happens if I miss this shot, what happens if I lose this match. I just committed to the way I wanted to play from the first point to the last. A couple days ago I didn’t. That’s what hurt so much.”

He also shared his thoughts on the mindset he adopted for his third group stage match: “Today I knew that no matter what, I wanted to be proud of my decision making, my aggressive mindset, and I wanted to go out there and try to win the match.”
