Wayne Gretzky Makes Opinion Clear on Connor McDavid Putting Oilers On The Clock With $25 Million Deal

Wayne Gretzky shared his honest thoughts on Connor McDavid’s new $25 million deal, saying it puts the Edmonton Oilers on the clock.

Connor McDavid’s new contract has once again placed the Edmonton Oilers in the spotlight. The team’s captain, known for his play and leadership, remains the core of the franchise and its offensive strength. With a new two-year, $25 million extension beginning in the 2026-27 season, the expectations around him and the team have naturally grown.

After losing consecutive Stanley Cup Finals to the Florida Panthers in 2023-24 and 2024-25, the Oilers continue to search for their breakthrough. McDavid’s extension signals loyalty but also adds pressure on the organization to build a team capable of winning now. His decision ensures stability for the near future while reminding everyone that the window for success remains open but not endless.

Did Wayne Gretzky Just Confirm That McDavid’s New Deal Puts Pressure on the Oilers

Wayne Gretzky, one of the greatest players in hockey history and a key figure in the Oilers’ legacy, recently spoke about Connor McDavid’s new deal. On 100% Hockey with John Shannon and Daren Millard, Gretzky said, “I think everybody is [aware that they’re on the clock]. I think he sent the message loud and clear. And good for him. He still gets paid a lot of money. Is he getting what he deserves? No, probably not, because he’s one of the guys that sells tickets in every stadium that he goes to. People get out of their chairs.”

Gretzky’s comments can be seen as both supportive and instructive. He recognizes McDavid’s impact but also underlines the urgency for the Oilers to make progress.

McDavid’s $12.5 million annual contract is not just about salary; it’s a statement of intent. The 28-year-old center has done everything possible to push Edmonton toward success, leading them to two straight Finals appearances. Now, the expectation shifts to management to provide the necessary support to take the next step.

McDavid continues to lead by example this season. In 17 games, he has scored 7 goals and collected 17 assists for 24 points while averaging over 23 minutes of ice time. Despite a minus-4 rating, he remains the driving force behind Edmonton’s offense. The Oilers, currently 7-6-4, have struggled with consistency, displaying flashes of strong play alongside defensive issues.

General manager Stan Bowman had noted that McDavid chose the contract value himself, highlighting his focus on the team’s success over individual gain.

“[The $12.5 million] was what Connor wanted; it’s not like we made a pitch that he should sign for that amount,” Bowman said in October, via NHL.com. “Getting to know Connor how I have for the last year, he’s such a one-of-a-kind guy, such a tremendous leader.”
