Alex de Minaur’s Struggles in the Jimmy Connors Group

De Minaur’s campaign in Turin has been challenging from the start. Drawn in the Jimmy Connors Group alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Lorenzo Musetti, and Taylor Fritz, the 26-year-old found himself battling uphill in each encounter. He began his Finals journey with a 6-7(5), 2-6 loss to top seed Alcaraz.

Things didn’t get easier in his second round-robin match against Musetti, where he squandered a 5-3 lead in the final set before losing 5-7, 6-3, 5-7. With the two losses, de Minaur officially bowed out of semifinal contention, extending his ATP Finals record to 0-5.

How Did De Minaur Describe the Pain of Losing Close Matches?

Following his loss to Musetti, de Minaur faced reporters, expressing the depth of his frustration. When asked to describe how he felt in the immediate aftermath, the Australian said, “I think it’s probably a good thing I don’t express my feelings right now because they’re quite dark.”

“Yeah, to be honest, it just feels like it’s been that type of year where I’ve had what feels like a whole lot of matches that should have gone my way and just somehow don’t, so… I mean, yeah, don’t feel great.”

Pressed further about whether he believed there was anything more he could have done in the match, de Minaur was brutally honest. “Just have a talk to my team and try to sort out these issues because these are issues that can’t keep happening,” he said.

“I mean, if I really want to be serious about taking the next step in my career, these matches, I can’t lose ’em. I just can’t. I mean, it feels like I’ve lost a lot of them this year. I mean, more than anything it’s getting to a point where mentally it’s killing me.”

Asked about what comes next and how he plans to recover from the mental strain, de Minaur said, “Just win these matches. I mean, I don’t know. It’s something that if it doesn’t get sorted, it’s going to eat me alive. I need to get it sorted sooner rather than later. Yeah, I don’t know how many times I can deal with a loss like this one.”

Looking ahead, de Minaur will face sixth seed Taylor Fritz in his remaining round-robin match at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, where he’ll aim to end his season on a high note.
