Elias Pettersson Addresses Scoring Slump As Canucks Keep Searching for Answers

For Elias Pettersson, this season with the Vancouver Canucks has been about more than points or statistics. It’s been about finding rhythm again while handling the pressure of leadership and adapting to changes within the team. The Swedish forward, now in his eighth NHL season, is learning to stay patient as the team navigates its ups and downs.

As the Canucks continue to deal with lineup changes and an uneven start, Pettersson’s response to these challenges has become central to their story. His scoring slump has caught attention, but it also reveals the bigger picture: his evolving role and the responsibilities that come with it.

Is Elias Pettersson Finding His Form as the Canucks Try to Improve?

Pettersson, 26, remains a key figure for the Canucks. After J.T. Miller was traded to the New York Rangers in January, the team turned to Pettersson to lead the offense and stabilize the locker room. The move came after months of speculation about a strained relationship between the two stars.

Under new head coach Adam Foote, Pettersson has been trusted with more defensive responsibility and penalty-killing duties. In 15 games this season, he has three goals and seven assists while averaging nearly 20 minutes per game. Though his scoring numbers have dipped, his defensive play has become more solid, showing his growing maturity.

Pettersson has also acknowledged that he needs to shoot the puck more often.

“I agree, I can shoot more,” he said, via Sportsnet. “I’ve always been a pass-first guy, but I also know I have a good shot. It’s a mindset that I can be better at.”

Pettersson’s off-season training focused on adding strength, and it has helped him win more puck battles and hold his own physically. He has also been among the NHL’s top forwards in blocked shots (31).

“Some bruises, but it would hurt a lot more if the puck went in,” he said. “I don’t mind blocking shots. I was a soccer goalie at a young age, so I still have those instincts.”

The Canucks have faced a slow start at 7-8-0, dealing with injuries and lineup changes. With Miller gone and few experienced centers behind him, Pettersson has had to handle tough matchups. Despite the extra work, he remains positive about his role and the pressure that comes with it.

“It’s pressure on me, but that’s a very good problem to have,” he said. “I’m very fortunate to be doing what I’m doing.”

Drafted fifth overall in 2017, Pettersson signed an eight-year, $92.8 million contract that runs through 2031–32. He is expected to be one of the cornerstones of the team’s long-term plans. As the Canucks continue to adjust and search for consistency, Pettersson’s play and mindset may be what keeps the team moving in the right direction.
