J.J. McCarthy Must Steer Vikings’ Offense Through Second Half of the Season

As the Vikings hit the midpoint of the season, the spotlight is on J.J. McCarthy’s growth and how his progress could shape Minnesota’s 2026 plans.

The Minnesota Vikings enter the second half of the 2025 season in evaluation mode. After a first half derailed by injuries, including five missed games for J.J. McCarthy, the focus now shifts to development. The second-year quarterback made his return in Detroit and helped lead a 27-24 win, reminding the organization why the remaining schedule is all about his growth and command of the offense.

Minnesota Vikings Go as Far as J.J. McCarthy Grows

ESPN’s NFL Nation reporters released midseason reports for every team. Each analysis features a first-half storyline, a key quarterback statistic to note, and a second-half storyline. One stat to know about McCarthy confirms what the tape shows.

“McCarthy has had some big moments and has run or thrown for every touchdown the Vikings have scored in his starts, according to ESPN. “But he has also demonstrated a level of indecision to be expected from a player of his experience level. The first-year starter is averaging 3.12 seconds before throwing, third most of any quarterback who has thrown more than five passes this season.”

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert added, “No matter how the team fares in the win-loss column, the Vikings’ top priority is getting McCarthy as many snaps as they can. In a best-case scenario, he’ll play the Vikings’ final 10 games after missing 23 of the previous 25 contests. That will go a long way toward speeding his development and solidifying team-building plans for 2026.”

That development process began in Detroit, where McCarthy accounted for three touchdowns and showed more control in head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offense. Through his first three starts, he has displayed both playmaking ability and moments of hesitation typical of a young quarterback still adjusting to NFL speed.

The flashes of improvement have been encouraging. McCarthy’s pocket presence and timing with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison stood out in Week 9, and his willingness to attack downfield helped stretch Detroit’s secondary. As he continues to settle in, the Vikings want to see him strike a balance between aggression and efficiency.

Vikings’ Second Half Is About Development

At 4-4, Minnesota remains within reach in the NFC North, but long-term growth takes priority over short-term results. The Vikings have one of the league’s most favorable remaining schedules, with winnable games against the Giants, Cowboys, and Commanders in December.

McCarthy, ranked 36th in PFSN’s QBi, doesn’t need to carry the offense overnight. He just needs to keep stacking games and showing progress as the Vikings aim to establish stability under center.
