Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets’ head coach Brent Key has been credited with totally reshaping the program since his promotion from interim head coach to head coach before the start of the 2022 season.
Key has led the Yellow Jackets to an 8-1 start this season, following back-to-back 7-6 seasons in 2023 and 2024. With eyes on Georgia Tech, currently ranked 17th in the College Football Playoff rankings, many have linked the Yellow Jackets’ head coach to openings across the country, including high-profile positions at LSU, Florida, Auburn, and Penn State.
What Did Brent Key Have to Say About Leaving Georgia Tech?
According to college football insider Pete Nakos, Key has quietly shut down the coaching carousel rumors, reiterating his focus on the Yellow Jackets and reinforcing his loyalty to a Georgia Tech program that is as much a part of him as he is of it.
“Since I came back here, since I was named the head coach here, outside of the time with my family, every waking second of my life has gone towards building this program, to get to the point that it is right now,” Key said.
“So that in turn we can continue three years from now, five years from now, 10 years from now, continue to elevate this place to be in that conversation. Not to be in there for two or three weeks, but to be a consistent team, not when you lose one game, have people say the storybook is over. Nah, it’s just the beginning. Slice me open and see what colors I bleed.”

After years of running an option offense under Paul Johnson, Key was a crucial component of a change in offensive identity under Geoff Collins. When Collins was dismissed after a 1-3 start in the 2022 season, the former offensive line coach got the opportunity to become the interim head coach.
He stepped in and made an instant impact, upsetting a top-25 Pitt Panthers team, before beating the Duke Blue Devils and leading the team to road wins at the Virginia Tech Hokies and No. 13 North Carolina Tar Heels to end the season strong.
Fast forward three seasons, and the Yellow Jackets are currently in the fight to reach the ACC Championship Game. Next up for Georgia Tech is a road trip to take on the Boston College Eagles, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
