What Happened to Cooper Kupp? Breaking Down Why Seahawks WR Is Not Playing on SNF vs. Commanders

The Seattle Seahawks are back after their Week 8 bye, ready to go against the Washington Commanders on Sunday Night Football. At 5-2, Seattle has been one of the stronger teams in the league this season, thanks to a well-balanced offense and good quarterback play.

But as they get ready for this game, the Seahawks will be without their veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who will not play due to multiple injuries.

Cooper Kupp Injury Update

During practice leading up to Week 9, Kupp suffered a heel injury and a hamstring strain. He was listed as questionable on the team’s final injury report, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday morning.

“Seahawks WR Cooper Kupp, listed as questionable for Sunday night due to a heel and hamstring injury, is unlikely to play vs. the Commanders, per source,” posted Schefter on X.

Kupp joined the Seahawks this offseason after being released by the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent eight productive years. During his time in Los Angeles, Kupp became one of the best receivers in the NFL and also won Super Bowl MVP in 2022. Seattle signed him to bring experience and reliability to a young receiver group led by Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The plan was for Kupp to serve as a dependable target for new quarterback Sam Darnold.

Through seven games, Kupp’s numbers were not flashy but were steady. He caught 24 passes for 293 yards and one touchdown, proving to be a consistent short and mid-range target. Kupp’s PFSN Impact Score is 75.5 with a grade of C. He ranks 43rd among all WRs this season.

Seattle’s Depth at Wide Receiver

Kupp’s precise route-running and leadership helped the entire offense function more smoothly. Without him, Seattle will need younger players to fill the gap. The Seahawks were already short-handed at receiver, with Jake Bobo and Dareke Young both ruled out earlier in the week. Thus, Seattle called up Cody White and Ricky White III from the practice squad.

“The Seahawks had already ruled out Jake Bobo and Dareke Young, so Kupp would be the third receiver they’re missing,” Brady Henderson reported, via clutchpoints.com. “Seattle elevated Cody White and Ricky White III off their practice squad.”

Tory Horton is also expected to see more playing time, leaving the Seahawks with a very young and inexperienced group behind Smith-Njigba.
