Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has been searching for answers all season. After entering the year with championship aspirations, the Tigers currently sit at a disappointing 3-4 following a 35-24 loss to the SMU Mustangs two weeks ago.
Swinney has been the head coach at Clemson since 2008. After serving as the wide receivers coach, the Tigers’ head coach assumed the role on an interim basis in 2008. He has served as head coach since 2009, entering his 17th year as a coach in Death Valley.
Fear Grips Dabo Swinney Amid Mass College Football Coaching Exodus
During a recent press conference, the Tigers’ head coach shared his thoughts on whether he believes his job is currently in jeopardy. Clemson is currently 3-4 this season and in danger of missing out on bowl contention. According to PFSN’s playoff meter, they are projected to finish at 5-6.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says college football has become a “bloodsport” with all of the coach firings.
“Everybody loves to see people get fired, I guess,” Swinney says.
Said it “all about the playoff” and expectations are high nowadays.

“It’s similar to the NFL in that regard. I’d think so. I’m very fortunate here because I’ve been the coach 17 years, not two years, not four years, I have a track record. But they could get rid of me tomorrow, that’s part of it.” Swinney shared.
This comment comes after a recent carousel of firings in College Football. Florida Gators’ head coach Billy Napier, LSU head coach Brian Kelly, and Penn State head coach James Franklin have all lost their jobs in recent weeks.
Following the loss to SMU, the Tigers were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, according to PFSN’s playoff meter. However, quarterback Cade Klubnik has continued to defend Swinney’s track record recently.
“I don’t really care. I came here to win,” Klubnik said. “I haven’t won a Championship, but I have two ACC titles. Dabo Swinney has won eight ACC titles in the last ten years, two championships. He keeps winning even when everyone says he hasn’t done it right.”
Swinney is being scrutinized more intensively because of the Tigers’ apparent stagnation, particularly on offense. The team has not beaten a single power conference opponent in over a year, and the playcalling has been widely questioned as they have dropped to 3-4 overall.
Dabo Swinney talking about all of the painful moments he’s experienced at Clemson. Says there’s been a lot of them.
As far as Clemson being 3-4 right now: “We need a great November. We gotta find a way to have a great November around here. And then we start over.”

“We need a great November. We gotta find a way to have a great November around here. And then we start over.” Swinney stated during the press conference. Clemson has games against Duke, Florida State, Louisville, and South Carolina scheduled for November.
“I don’t know that there’s ever been a coach that hasn’t had a bad season. If you fire your coach every time they have a bad season, you’re gonna have a hard time having a program.” Swinney shared recently, revealing how the Clemson higher-ups feel.
“But the leadership here, they’ve got great perspective. They’ve been incredibly supportive. And they know we’ll finish well, and then we’ll start over, like we do every year, and charge back up the mountain in 2026.”
After winning two National titles in 2016 and 2018, as well as 8 ACC Titles in the last ten years, including last year, Swinney most likely has a long way to go until he joins the likes of Kelly, Franklin, and Napier in unemployment despite a poor season in 2025.
