Leylah Fernandez vs Eva Lys Preview: Head-to-Head, Prediction for Hong Kong Open 2025

Second-seeded Leylah Fernandez will face Germany's Eva Lys in the second round of the Hong Kong Open final on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025.

2023 champion Leylah Fernandez will face Germany’s Eva Lys in the second round of the 2025 Hong Kong Open on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

Having struggled with a rather quiet season on the WTA Tour for the majority of 2025, Fernandez made plenty of amends with her fifth singles triumph at the Japan Open earlier this month. The Canadian extended her year-to-date win/loss record to 32-24 in Hong Kong on Tuesday, October 28, beating China’s Wang Xiyu 6-1, 6-4 to reach the 250-level event.

Lys, meanwhile, has also had a similar season to that of the World No. 22, with a 34-23 win/loss record and a top 50 record to boot. The 23-year-old dominated Russia’s Kristina Sidorova 6-0, 6-3 in her first-round match at this year’s Hong Kong Open in dominant fashion on Monday, October 27.

While Fernandez has an 8-1 win/loss record in Hong Kong from her 2023 triumph and 2024 semifinal run, Lys is making her first appearance at the hardcourt tournament.

Fernandez vs Lys Head-to-Head

Lys beat Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in the first-qualifying round of the 2023 China Open. However, qualifying matches aren’t considered in the official WTA Tour records, so their head-to-head stands at 0-0.

Fernandez vs Lys Prediction

Fernandez turned in a solid performance on her serve during her first-round win on Tuesday, winning 76% (22/29) of her first-serve points. The 23-year-old will likely find herself at home on the medium-paced hardcourts in Hong Kong, which suit her impeccable shot selection and quick shotmaking.

Lys also won 76% (26/34) of her first-serve points against Sidorova earlier this week, underlining her proficiency on serve. Although she has a much more counterpunching game than the second seed, the German’s endurance sets her apart from many players on the WTA Tour.

Fernandez, on her part, will be looking to take advantage of her left-handed playing style and put pressure on Lys’ backhand. Provided the former Hong Kong Open titlist manages to pull her lower-ranked opponent out wide on the Ad side, she will be the firm favorite to win this match.

Prediction: Leylah Fernandez will win in straight sets.
