Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott faced a heavy pass rush from the Denver Broncos defense all day long on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. The Broncos totally took control of their game with Dallas into the fourth quarter.
The Cowboys decided to make a change at quarterback in the fourth quarter, though, with Denver up 44-17.
What Happened to Cowboys QB Dak Prescott?
Prescott did his best to keep the Cowboys in contention, but he was not able to keep the game close. He was taken out of the game in the fourth quarter.
Joe Milton III came on in relief and connected for a touchdown pass late in the game, making the final score 44-24. On the late scoring drive, Milton was 3-for-4 passing for 58 yards and that TD pass. He came back out to lead the Cowboys’ last drive of the game, too.

When Prescott left, there was no indication that he was injured. It looks like Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer just wanted to protect him from the Denver defense’s further pressure. Entering Sunday’s game, according to the PFSN NFL QB Impact metrics, Prescott had an 88.8 QB Impact Score and graded out at a B+.
Prescott faced heat all day long, including from Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton. The Cowboys star was 19-for-31 for 188 yards passing, no touchdowns, and two interceptions against Denver.
With the Broncos securing a victory late in the fourth quarter, Denver goes to 6-2 for the season and a perfect 4-0 mark at home. Dallas falls to 3-4-1 on the season.

Prescott has been working hard to get in rhythm with wide receivers like George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb this season. Pickens and Lamb both caught seven passes from Prescott in the Denver game, going for 78 and 74 yards, respectively. Neither one of them caught a touchdown pass from Prescott in the game.
The Dallas defense gave up 427 total yards to the Denver offense. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix outdueled Prescott on Sunday, going 19-of-29 passing for 247 yards, four touchdown passes, and one interception.
Entering next week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, Prescott and the Cowboys have a chance at AT&T Stadium to get back into the win column. Prescott will have to play a lot better than he did on Sunday. Also, the Cowboys’ offensive line needs to do a better job of protecting Prescott in the pocket.
Prescott knows he has to play better as the 2025 NFL season rolls along. The Cowboys still hope to make the playoffs, too, but their record has to improve as well.
