Can the Falcons Still Make the Playoffs? A Look at Atlanta’s Updated Postseason Chances After Week 8 Loss

The Falcons lost to the Dolphin, putting their NFL playoff chances on the downside. Here's how the numbers look for them to make the postseason.

The Atlanta Falcons were going up a wounded Miami Dolphins team on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Despite having a home game, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had a great game and outplayed Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Miami snapped its three-game losing streak by downing the Falcons 34-10. With the loss, Atlanta might want to check on its NFL postseason chances at this point.

What Are Falcons’ NFL Playoff Chances?

As the Dolphins-Falcons game rolled along, Cousins was getting roasted for his play. Miami, at one point, led Atlanta 31-3. Cousins wasn’t the answer for Falcons head coach Raheem Morris at all against the Dolphins.

For the game, Cousins was 21-of-31 passing for 179 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. The Falcons couldn’t even get star running back Bijan Robinson involved in the offense too much on Sunday. Cousins had to fight off players like Miami linebacker Jaelan Phillips all game long.

Now, about those NFL playoff odds? According to PFSN’s Football Playoff Meter (FPM), the Falcons have an 18.9% chance of making the postseason. Atlanta has a 7.7% chance of winning their division and a 0.5% of winning the Super Bowl.

The Falcons have a 0.2% chance of getting the NFC’s No. 1 postseason seed and a 0.5% chance of picking up the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Atlanta only posted 213 total yards on offense against Miami, a team that was looking hard for an identity. The Falcons were 2-for-11 on third down and 2-for-4 on fourth down. Putting these numbers up against the Dolphins, who were making more headlines off the field than on it, will cause Falcons fans to cause a ruckus.

Their angst might be directed toward Cousins, who’s been around the NFL for a long time and knows a thing or two about playing in it. Still, his effort against the Dolphins leaves Atlanta with more questions than answers.

Morris needs Michael Penix Jr. back in there as soon as possible at quarterback. Robinson has enough tools as a running back, who played his college ball at the University of Texas, to be an important part of the Falcons’ offensive scheme.

With a few games still left in the 2025 NFL season for the Falcons, they need to get the ball into Robinson’s hands more. Atlanta also needs a quarterback who can effectively lead the offense up and down the field when it counts. Cousins is not the answer at this point.
