The Vancouver Canucks haven’t inspired much confidence since the puck dropped on the 2025/26 NHL season. Most fans were already resigned to the fact that the Canucks would once again be in purgatory this season – not good enough to be true, blue Stanley Cup contenders, and not bad enough to stink up the place and tank for a high draft pick.
While the Canucks’ roster screamed for the addition of some depth at center, GM Patrik Allvin decided to give fans something to talk about, pulling off a trade for a man who was on the trade block for a while and then some.
Vancouver Canucks’ Trade For Lukas Reichel Sees Fans Get Vocal
On Friday, Oct. 24, the Canucks GM decided to ring up his compatriot over in Chicago and swing a trade for Lukas Reichel, a man who was on the outside looking in this year. All it took on Vancouver’s part was to send a 2027 fourth-round pick Chicago’s way.
“He is a talented playmaker who can create scoring opportunities with his offensive ability. We like the way he moves on the ice and his overall work ethic, and feel our coaching staff can help him become a better and more consistent hockey player,” Allvin told the media following the move.
Considering that the fourth-round pick originally belonged to the Blackhawks anyway (the Canucks acquired it in June 2024), the haul itself didn’t draw much of a reaction from either fanbase. Canucks fans, however, unequivocally billed it as a low-risk, high-reward deal.
Reichel was averaging the lowest ice time on the Blackhawks, so the move to Vancouver is likely to serve as a boost as the Canucks look to get back on the right track.

Why Did The Canucks Trade For Lukas Reichel?
The consensus was there for all to see. Most fans believe the Canucks took advantage of a low-risk opportunity by adding some depth, but the fact that the 2C spot is still up in the air is an area of concern fans aren’t willing to let slide.
In five games for the Blackhawks this season, Reichel racked up four points (2-2-4), two penalty minutes, and a +1 plus/minus rating. The 2020 first-round pick is expected to get some leeway to prove he brings something to the table in Vancouver as the Canucks look to pick up the pieces after suffering a laundry list of injuries early in the season.
Whether the Canucks get him up to speed in time for Saturday’s home game against the Montreal Canadiens remains to be seen, though that appears to be the game plan for now.
