Brian Kelly Tipped to Make Shocking Career Decision as ‘Crazy’ Buyout Stalls LSU’s Firing Bid

Fox Sports insider Aaron Torres revealed a potential shocking factor to consider in the current rumors surrounding LSU and head coach Brian Kelly.

No. 10 LSU and No. 17 Vanderbilt faced off over the weekend for a massive Week 8 SEC matchup. Going into the game, Brian Kelly’s side was looking to win its 11th straight meeting against the Commodores. The Tigers ultimately fell to a 31-24 loss.

Following the game, No. 20 LSU is currently 5-2 on the season and is in danger of missing the College Football Playoffs again under its head coach. This has led to calls from fans to follow in Penn State and Florida’s footsteps and fire their head coaches.

Brian Kelly Tipped to Make Shock Career Decision

After suggestions that LSU could move on from Kelly, Fox Sports insider Aaron Torres revealed his take on the situation in Louisiana. On the latest episode of the “Aaron Torres Sports Podcast,” the insider shared one shocking factor to consider in the potential firing.

“I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that Brian Kelly retires after this year. I watched that SEC Netflix documentary, and he doesn’t look like he’s having fun. I can’t imagine it’s fun having to play for him either.” Torres revealed.

The “SEC Football: Any Given Saturday” documentary was released just weeks before the 2025 season. In one of the opening episodes, Kelly was seen cursing out his team during a preseason practice ahead of the 2024 season.

“I’m going to say it one more f***ing time. If you want to come out here and go half-speed, go ahead. I’m going f***ing in. Is that clear? If you guys want to go half-speed, let me know now. You’re wasting my time.” The LSU coach screamed at his players.

“So I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility, that he says. This ain’t working, I’m not staying. We’ll see what happens at the end of the year. But it’s time to admit it, Brian Kelly isn’t the answer at LSU. I don’t know where they go from here.” Torres concluded.

Why Hasn’t LSU Fired Kelly Yet?

During the episode, Torres shared that he doesn’t believe LSU has the money to fire the head coach. The LSU coach signed a 10-year contract in 2021 that will take him through the 2031 season.

According to reports by USA Today and CBS Sports, LSU would owe Kelly $53.3 million if the athletic director chose to fire him without cause. Kelly has seven years remaining on his 10-year, $95 million deal that runs through December 31, 2031.

“This was supposed to be the year. For years, you’ve been telling us what you don’t have, what you need. Well, you got all the money to buy the roster that you want, and you’re still getting beat up by Vandy, you’re still losing to Ole Miss.” Torres argued.

While the head coach has undeniably built himself some goodwill with the fans over the last few years, one thing is missing. LSU’s ambition over the last few seasons has been to contend for a National Championship, and its current head coach hasn’t delivered.

Currently, the dreams of a National Championship look to be all but over this year. Despite their losses, they are still ranked 20th overall in the Top 25 AP Poll. According to PFSN’s playoff meter, they also have a 13% chance of making the playoffs.

With a ranked SEC matchup against Texas A&M this weekend, who are currently 7-0 on the season. This could be the week that LSU finally drops out of the Top 25. With that, it could potentially be the final nail in the coffin for Kelly’s time in Louisiana.
